STREET RODS AND HOT RODS
New England Concours d’Elegance to add historic hot rods and customs class
Hot rods and customs have always been a sore topic among prestigious show organizers. After all, they’re the hoodlums of the collector car scene; they’re the cars you don’t want to see your teenage daughter climb into on a Friday night. So aside from a handful of concours, most won’t have anything to do with them.
But on the other hand, what better car to represent the American spirit? What better car to celebrate in a display of historically significant automobiles?
That’s why Hemmings will introduce a historic hot rods and customs class in this year’s second annual New England Concours d’Elegance, scheduled for July 18-20 at Stratton Mountain, Vermont.
Similar to the historic hot rods class that has attracted much attention at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the New England Concours class will only feature hot rods or customs originally built before 1964 — no modern street rods, no clones, not even any traditional-style rods or customs built since then. Unlike the Pebble Beach hot rod class, the New England Concours class will focus on rods and customs built in the Northeast and in New England, where hot rods and customs had their own distinct culture, influenced by but wholly separate from the Southern California hot rod culture.
