Default Chesnut taking a break for health reasons

Hey everyone, Some of you know me for my Dragon cars that I have been building since 2001. Recently I began marketing a Cobra replica based on C5/6 suspension.
I am now well into my 50's and I am falling apart!!! I was hit at the knees by a run a way car and rammed full throttle into the bumber of a parked truck a number of years ago. I had 5 surgeries over a couple of years to walk. That knee has finally worn out and I need a replacement. I also injured my shoulder last year and I have been told I need surgery to repair that. But, my biggest problem is that I am having complications from diabetes. I can not have the needed surgeries until I get my blood sugar under control.
So, reluctantly I am having to take a break from building cars. I am finishing a couple right now but that will be it for at least a while. I know that there will be some that speculate that the real reason is the economy. But, I do my cars for fun, I make my living from products that I have invented and license or have manufactured and sold.
I appreciate the support from my customers and from this forum. I will continue to be here as I plan to drive my Dragon and Cobra as much as possible this summer. See you down the road! John

Look after your health, John and get back at it when you're good and ready. Good luck and get well soon.

Hey John, hang in there. Take care of yourself first. The car stuff if definately the small stuff. I really enjoy seeing you at RunNgun. Would like to see you there many more times. Next time just have your car finished before you get there. More fun that way. Take care.

Get to a good doctor (e.g., Internal Medicine, Endocrinologist) and you should be able to get your diabetes under control in a short amount of time. There are a number of medicines that should work for you (pills and/or insulins). Also, diet and exercise are critical.

Diabetes is a nasty disease and is not something to mess with.

Good luck.

If your like me you have to look at food LIKE ITS MEDICINE. Once I came to grips with that all the salads and rabbit food came easier. Eat just what makes you better and thats it. Forget everything else. God Bless. Get well soon.

Thanks for the support. I wish it was as simple as eating the right things for me. It seems that my body will not process insulin. I am on extremely large doses of insulin, injected 4 times per day, eating right, and taking oral medication that makes me pretty sick. Still my blood sugar levels are 4 to 5 times normal. This has the doctors, including specialists baffled.

John. Talk to your Doctors about going full on vegetarian. See what they say. Sometimes the body needs to be shocked into changing. I've been on plenty of medications but permanently changing my diet did more for my health than anything else. Within a week or so I could feel my core getting stronger and my energy was doubled. I'd at least talk to a Dr. well versed in naturopathic medicine. It wont hurt to get a 2nd opinion from an opposite point of view.

Definately get your health in line first John. My mother recently had her shoulder replaced and she has non-insulin Diabetes. Her recovery has been slow but she keeps at the therapy, which is really important.

John ... make very sure everyone on the surgical team knows you have diabetes .... don`t assume they do . It affects what they do on all procedures .... and try to get your procedure scheduled for early in the morning . I have had several joint replacements ( airports are lots of fun ) and had my surgery bumped out once when I was already in pre op so someone who had diabetes could go first as their blood sugar was an issue . If you get everything under control , you won`t have any problems . My replacements were hips , but I know several people with the knee replacements and they are very pleased with the results .
I realize you have knee problems , but the PT folks at the hospital told me that the better the shape I was in before surgery , the shorter and easier the recovery ... and they recommended swimming for me . You might check with the folks who will be doing your post operative PT and your Doctor ... which it sounds like you already have .
Good Luck !!!

Bob

Thanks everyone, I plan to drive one of my cars to Carlisle in May and also be at Run n Gun. I am finishing the dash and interior on my Cobra, hope to have it on the road next week, finishing my Dragon Speedster which I hope to have done in a couple of weeks. I have a customers Cobra to finish, a Dragon to finish for another and I am rebuilding my Sons Motorcycle powered sprint car whose racing season starts on May 3rd. In addition I have two trade shows coming up for my primary business! I am still way too busy.
I appreciate the support and prayers. I am hoping to have the necessary surgeries over next winter.
Tony, can't wait to see you on the track! John
