Default Shelby Cobra wins at Open Track Challenge

The Tom’s Motorsports, Journey Racing Team CSX4180 Shelby Cobra of Kevin Rogers and Tom Barnard scored an Unlimited American GT class win and a 10th place overall in the 2003 edition of the Open Track Challenge. The Open Track Challenge is an endurance type of racing event that challenges the competitors with 7 racetracks in 7 days. Despite missing 3 sessions on day 2 due to a valve train problem, missing 2 sessions on day 4 due to a broken differential mount, and missing 2 sessions on day 5 due to being black flagged for “excessive noise”, the CSX4000 Shelby Cobra proved its winning heritage by defeating some of the finest road racing cars in the west. Some of the entered competition included a new factory Dodge Viper Competition Coupe, a new Mosler MT900, driven by Rupert Bragg-Smith, and 3 Radical Sports Racers. Complete results, including daily times and placings can be found at www.opentrackchallenge.com.

This was a tough event, and I congratulate the crew for a job well done. I am still working on getting video footage of the event, and will post links when I get them.

Before you break out the champagne check out who was amongst those who placed higher. A 240Z, 2 S2000's, an M3 and an NSX. Oh, and the aforementioned 4 banger Miata was only two places behind the Cobra.

Kputz,

You are correct on your comments. However, some things to consider.
An aerodynamic brick vs. some pretty aero cars (including the Z with race suspension as I was told and the full blown race Miata with approx 300hp at the rear).
The other top finishers were fairly stripped down racers (rather than thinking they where stock).
Most all knew the big tracks where team 80 had never seen but the Pharump track.
40 year old technology (frame, suspension, etc) vs. some very high tech stuff.

All in all, I think Team 80 did pretty well. Yes, I am part of Team 80 and very happy with our position.

Great !
Glad to see you out there having fun. Too many cobra's are trailer queens, that's not what these cars are made for, they are best putting some rubber down.

Thanks for all the congrats.

Matt, thanks for the kind words as well. I don't know about Hallet yet. It's rather soon after National SAAC this year. I'm going to try but honestly don't know yet.

Wow, looks like lots of fun. I went to a brass bushing in those upper rear end mounts. That same deflection was cracking the lower bracket for the rear end. Once I went to solid upper mounts and braced the lower bracket, problem solved. Great job, Scott.

Good job! Some lose sight of how fast some race preped new high tech cars can be! In fact the Cobra placed higher than some pretty fast company. Not bad for a 40 year old design and technology.

Don't mind some of the sour pusses. Some are just get a kick out of raining on others parades.

Where there any other Cobras in the Challenge (replica or real) and how did they do??

I hope the Cobra handed Rupert's ass to him - I had yet to meet anyone in the motorsports community that I truly disliked until I met him....

Yeah, Good job, Kevin! Some of those Japanese cars are almost "dialed in" from the factory!
