That was the worst possable thing that could have happened. I didn't know Mark, but had seen him pass by my shop at 320 Euclid a few times. You couldn't miss his cobra, it was very bright, metal flake green and could be heard from a ways away ifin he was mashin' it.
I was hoping to biuld/distribute a few cobras in Des Moines once I could get one of the major companies interested. I emailed Unique about doing just that, w/o a reply.
My condolances to all those who knew and loved Mark.

From the video of the news clip it sounds like the Trans AM "bumped" into the Cobra at speed. Causing the Cobra to loose control. Very very sad.

Tran Am owner has been questioned, but not yet arrested, which is still possible if the police conclude he caused the accident.

I was out of town for a few days and just learned of Mark's death. Mark and I have been friends for many many years and I will miss him greatly. Death is always a horrible loss, but loosing one of the realy "good" ones is even harder.

I'll be attending services for Mark on Monday and will take along all of the good thoughts for those of you that can't make it.

Very sad.. two things we have learned from this tragic loss.. 1). Green Cobra's really are bad luck.. 2). Life is way too short to drive a small block.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

These are high horsepower, short wheelbase cars. If you do not know how to drive a car like this - and NO ONE does, then you should not race your car, 'show off' or generally act like a jackass on a public road. Ever. Period. Street racing is dangerous even in the very best of conditions and you could die.

Take a driving class. Learn how to drive your car in a controlled environment (a racetrack), and drive responsibly at all times. These cars have no side intrusion protection, minimal rollbars if at all, and they will absolutely kill you in a heartbeat. You're an idiot to think any different.

My condolences go out to the family of the dead Cobra driver. If it's any consolation, he will not be endangering any more innocent people by doing something so insanely stupid ever again.

That was a little rough don't you think? We all make mistakes, and he paid dearly. Have you written any letters about the city bus drivers?! Scott

I think Mark was an expierenced driver all ready.

A driving class would not have made any difference in this case. It appears he was "bumped" and hit the soft shoulder of the road and rolled the car. You can't control an upside down car.

As I have said many time before...
Keep race cars on a race track!
You can go faster than you ever dreamed in a more controlled environment with all participants on the same page.
Sad story but it unfortunately will happen again.

I agree that "a driving class would not have made any difference in this case".... You can't teach common sense.

Interesting comments from someone who apparently knew the car from "a ways away" if Mark was on the throttle ("mashin it").

Per email received today from Frantic Frank, he clarifys my statement in this post to mean that he did not say he "could recognize the car from aways away, just that it could be heard from aways away ifin he was mashing it ."

Street racing is not a good idea no matter how good of a driver you are. I feel sad for the family and their great loss.

Talking Meat...

They do race, ever been cut-off by one? They don't go that fast, but they'll still crush you and your vehicle like a tin can. Scott

converyknck,

Thanks for the post. Are you the owner and/or driver of the Trans Am involved in the street race?

When I first read your post, I saw that your personal information below your name included "2002 Trans Am with Nit".

Now that information doesn't show.

Yes, I've been viciously attacked by a bus. It wasn't racing, nor did it crush me or my vehicle like a tin can. Nor did it roll repeatedly.

You're way off the mark.

Your pal,
Meat.
