Cinched up my belt, ate my Wheaties, gulped a Red Bull, pulled my John Wayne down over my eyes and went to DMV today.

I needed all that testosterone to walk past the lonnnnggggg line standing in the rain and up to the empty appoinments line. I was toasty warm from all the glares.

I did NOT need it for the DMV counter. As nice a guy as you could ask for, told me about the guy who came in yesterday to register purchase on a $100k Shelby Mustang, processed everything without a hitch. It's an "application in progress" since the skies split open ahead of schedule and I couldn't drive 707 there for the inspection, but I'll take care of that with a CHP inspection sometime next week.

Which will be no problem with a 60-day TOP.

Really. He asked. I said yes and tried not to grin too obviously.

Which means I can drive it the three dry days between now and 12/19, at least... and get to all the inspections etc. without trying to match up 2-day permits and clear weather.

Yes, I am grinning like an idiot now. Why do you ask?

That 60 day TOP is like CASH! That's 2 months (or 1/6) of regular registration fees you are saving by not having to register it until Jan.
Now, go out an celebrate with all the free money!!!

It's nice someone gets something free from the state.

No, nothin' free here. The registration is paid as of 10/19.

They didn't ding me for the use tax (yet), though, so I can keep all the interest on that until whenever.

I don't care about the money one way or t'other - I can DRIVE!

When it stops raining, that is. If. Rain and I don't get along - so this will be the year it rains every morning until June. (A number of years ago I desperately needed to unload some stuff at a flea market that only met once a month. It only rained one day a month for four months in a row...)

I shall speak delicately since I suspect Powers That Be might monitor these forums.

I went to the... "lakeside department of automobiling" to have my inspection and see about moving the process along.

The inspector was less than completely agile and had a hell of a time reading the Massachusetts tag under the lip of the cowl, above the gauges. S/he also got nearly every point about the car wrong, and the supervisor inside said they would have to redo the verification next time.

They were unable to figure out what to do with this 2006 vehicle with a 1966 engine and spun in circles for a while before just handing me back the paperwork and suggesting I call BAR. The supervisor was firmly of the opinion that I could pass the BAR exam based on the '66 powerplant.

I smiled, nodded, and left. I will do the rest of my visits at the original office. Those of you who had a better experience must have gotten other staff...

It's SB100 or nothing. I was under the impression that the State does not allow biannual inspections for SPCNS cars anymore.

No, I went back for the DMV verification that couldn't be done the first time because it was raining hard. It was an optional stop - the CHP check next month will stand for the DMV verification - but I had the appointment and thought I could move things along, or at least get some additional information. It was a total waste of time except that it was a beautiful cool morning to drive around.

I already have a MA-issued VIN so I don't know if CHP will issue a new one or not.

I think it was smart to get out of there. The VIN Verification form that accompanies the application for title specifically states that the VIN may still be subject to CHP verification even if you get someone from the DMV to verify it. Further, the DMV website states that the CHP verifies the VIN, and does not say anything about the DMV as an option. I suppose it's possible that you could get by with just the DMV performing the task, but I wouldn't want to get to within a foot of the finish line and then have the DMV counterperson say "Where's your CHP VIN verification form?", since they are different forms from what the DMV has.

But hey, you got to drive it today!
