Hi Al,
Long time no-hear-from. I don't know a lot about these top loaders, but I've learned quite a in the last week. A friend was over yesterday and told me it is a small shaft top loader. He was surprised because according to the tag it came out of a '67 Galaxie, 390. At any rate, I appreciate the offer, but I don't think it will work for me.
Good to hear from you and take care.

Maurice,
I dropped it off at Manual Transmission Warehouse on C st. It has a broken main shaft - it broke between 2nd and 3rd gears, which explains why 3rd and 4th were out of commission. So much for bullet proof top-loaders. I could understand it breaking in two if I was really banging through the gears, but I wasn't. Oh well, live-n-learn.
I'll post photos and commentary when I get it back.

Not bullet proof but not bad for a 45 year old transmission. I took out 2nd with a hard shift from my 289, took off all of the snycro teeth on the gear. things happen.

Hey Phil,
I had MTW do a few Muncie's and one of my early Cobra Toploaders with decent success quite a while back. You might ask for some kind of 1-year+ guarantee on parts and labor and see what they say. Also, for what its worth, ask them what parts are replaced with new or recycled just to have it for your record keeping log.

These top loaders are stout, but not unbreakable. Picked up my rebuilt tranny today, and hope to have installed before breakfast on Saturday.
Check the quarter for a reference of the diameter of the shaft.

Duane - I asked.... 12 month, unlimited mileage warranty. I should have asked for mileage rather than months

The same thing happened to me. Snapped the main shaft in two between second and third. Killed third and forth. I blamed mine on the fact that I used to trailer it in gear. I test drove it down at Southern, put her on the trailer and when I took it off, the gears were gone. I carried it to Vintage Mustang in Decatur, GA and had it rebuilt. Don (owner) said he'd never seen anything like it. Looks like it's happened at least twice.

Tony, so lightening does strike twice Just surprising with the size of the shaft. When I lost third and forth I thought it might be due to the linkage arm coming loose from the shifting arm... no such luck but wish it had been, because it would have been a hell of a lot less time and $$$$.

Rod,
Reading Tony's post my guess is yes. But as you pointed out... mine is 45 years old ('67 Galaxie 390) and stuff does break.

Not suggesting that the rebuilder is doing anything wrong, a main shaft is not something that would typically be replaced during a rebuild. I wonder if this a more common problem than we think?

She is back on the road! Installed the rebuilt transmission, gave it a good test/workout and everything is oakie-dokie. Happy I found MTW to rebuild it - $700 and I got it back in a few days..... yippee!!
