Default NorCal: Caravanning to Monterey Car Week Aug 2012

At the last NorCal Cobras breakfast and more recently there have been questions about who is driving down when and from where to Monterey for Car Week. A few folks north of us in NorCal, Oregon, Washington inquiring as well. Various groups are going down on different days - Tue, Wed, Thur, Fri. Be sure to state your day and meetup place or connect on PM.

If it helps, Reply here to connect with others.

Good idea Duane.... I will be taking the Hwy 1 route... from Sacramento to the Golden Gate Bridge south.... unfortunately I have to drive I-80 to 101 for the 1st leg of the trip. Might stop at Infineon for a few gallons of 112 octane, top off. I should have a full tank of at least 100 octane by Wed. am.

I anticipate leaving Wed. around 9-10am.

I'm headed down on Wednesday as well, will probably do the I-80 to 37 to 101 route and hit the coast in San Fransico for the cool ride the rest of the way down. But would like to head out early (maybe 6am-ish) to beat the heat with a stop for breakfast in Novado to let the commute traffic clear.

Yes, that is usually the route I take. I-80 to Hwy 37 to 101- left immediately past the GG Bridge and then proceed South on Hwy 1. Temperatures should be in the hi 60's by the time we hit the GG Bridge.

Pat and I are leaving Thur. mid morning and will be making more rest stops than the usual caravan. I 80 to Fairfield, south to San Jose and over the hill to Aptos.

Maybe drive on into Carmel and see the sights, energy permitting, and then to Seascape and get ready for the Thursday night tour.

I'll be leaving Thursday, probably mid-morning from Sacramento/Rocklin.

I'm flexible on time and route if anyone wants to tag a long.

I am now thinking of leaving Sac around 7AM to avoid the valley heat/traffic putting us at the GG Bridge before 11AM. Breakfast in S.F or the nice seaside cafe, with the T-Rex outside, in Montara south of Pacifica.

I'm re-thinking my route, I think Maurice has the right idea. Morning traffic on 37 and 101 is iffy. I think I just want to get there the first day and do some site seeing drives later. Try to get out of Roseville by 7:00 then I-80 to 680 to San Jose and over the hill on 17.
Maurice, what time is mid morning to you?

Jim,
Two things in this heat. I did the drive to Monterey twice in 105 on I5, and it was miserable. A friend reminded me of a few things to do, especially #2.

1. Better option - get to 37/101/CA1 south coastal weather as fast as you can.

2. Cold Towel - bring a small cooler with ice/water to dip a towel in and wrap it around your necks. You'll find yourself dipping and re-wrapping alot.

Have a safe drive.

Boy, I know the feeling. I've driven home from Thunderhill in 95 degree heat several times...the cold towel is a great idea, especially on the neck.

Thanks for the tips Duane. We'll do the cold towel for sure.

We are heading down friday am, going down I5 and cutting over at Andersons Split Pea Soup. Last time we went through the bay area the roads were awful, way too bumpy and full of potholes.
