So glad you're safe.
And love to hear of your "next one" with dual rollbars.
Just don't paint it beige.

Phil, you are blessed.
Did you have a passenger ?
How fast were you going, as I would think the car would have been worse ?
Is the chassis, frame, engine, Trans and rear end OK ?
Hopefully you can build another one.

My wife was with me. The engine and running gear are an unknown at this point. The car was upside down for at least a couple of hours. It is being "evaluated" at the present. And yes, we are blessed.

Looks repairable but maybe not to the insurance company.

Why? You'd dump as much in repairs for parts and labor as a new one. And it would be forever dogged with a salvage title. You'd never recover your money. Some parts may be salvageable, but as far as rebuilding this one, I'd pass.

This will be entirely your choice if you have no insurance. If you do you'll have to work with them.
You don't have to convince me.

Many thanks, Jim. Had my bell rung pretty good (still feeling the effects of a concussion), but we are coming along really good. Stitches and staples are out, swelling has gone down and only slightly black-n-blue.
Now the car, that's a different story. Looking at the smashed oil pan on the motor I just put 10 grand into makes me sick, but...........
Thanks again, Jim.

Some people take the insurance settlement and then buy the scrapped vehicle back (with a salvage title) and either part it out or rebuild.
Anyone with a Cobra is well advised to get an stated value policy where the company will pay that amount in case of a loss. You can't get greedy but a reasonable amount will usually be honored. The actual value policies never fully recognize the amount of sweat equity put into one of these.

100% agreed.
It would make an excellent donor car for a new build.

I bought my totaled NAF from my insurance since I knew the driveline components. I wound up having to get a new body and my best laid plans went south. Put a lot more money out that I'd planned and it took 5 years. Finally had a nicer car than it had been, but think I should have just bought another car and let the insurance company keep the wreck. I could have been driving those five years rather than fighting with about every aspect of the rebuild. Just my experience.

I have to agree. I had an "as stated value" policy and I've come out it better than expected. I have the option to buy it back as salvage, but no idea yet how much they will want, not that I'm interested unless it is really low!

Here in Australia things get tricky. If your car is deemed a write off, then it can't be reregistered until all proof of repairs are done by a certified crash repairer and been inspected by an engineer etc. JD

Such circumstances are governed by the states here. It varies quite a lot I believe.

Phil,
I haven’t been on the site for a while and was just checking in to see about the Christmas toy run when I came across your post.
So glad to hear you guys are okay, looking at the photos it is hard to believe it wasn’t a worse outcome. If you need help with anything let me know.

Phil,
Just saw this. I'm SO glad you two are OK. When I first saw the picture, my first thought was "I hope that wasn't anyone I know." If there's anything I can do, let me know.
