"A Folsom State prisoner serving a life term was stabbed to death early Monday after a fight broke out with another inmate in the yard, forcing a prison-wide lockdown, officials said.
The circumstances surrounding the 7:20 a.m. assault at the medium-security facility remained under investigation late Monday, but it appeared the victim was walking to a class after breakfast when the attack occurred, said Tip Kindel, a spokesman for the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
On Monday afternoon, Kindel said all of the prison's 3,800 inmates remained on lockdown -- a precaution that was expected to continue for the next few days.
"Our staff is doing a lot of interviews now to determine what sparked this," Kindel said before an afternoon meeting on the incident. "We don't know if this involved just these two inmates or something with broader implications.
"Right now, we don't know."
Officials did not release the identity of the slain inmate, pending notification of his family, but Kindel said the man was serving a life term at Folsom after a 1994 conviction for second-degree murder in San Diego County.
Kindel also did not release the name of the suspected assailant, who was also serving a life sentence for a second-degree murder, kidnapping and carjacking convictions in 1996 in Placer County.
The alleged assailant was taken to a Folsom Mercy hospital with unknown injuries incurred when guards had to use batons and pepper spray to subdue him. Kindel said the man continued to repeatedly stab the victim with a flat-metal stock sharpened to a 10 1/2-inch to 11-inch blade."
Looks like I'll be spending the weekend, pressing license plates!
It appears to be a "North - South" gang issue, so they'll probably keep the lockdown on for a while, to 'cool things off'

P.S. Anybody have Personalized License plates on order?
