Default Making a lightweight 1000lb Cobra trailer?

Any great ideas, blueprints, pictures or examples on how to make a lightweight 1000lb. dual axle Cobra trailer?


I'm looking at some different sport / crossover vehicles to replace my current tow rig situation, but still want to be able to tow the Cobra on occassion. The sport crossovers I'm looking at all have a max tow rating of 3,500lbs. This would mean I'd need to sell my existing heavy duty 1,800lb Cobra trailer and make something custom. Aluminum, or lean steal, open to ideas, blueprints, examples of other race car trailers. Also, if I can work this out, I may have a nice custom built drop-axle steel trailer for sale soon too, made for a 90" wheelbase Cobra. Ideas/Pictures, feedback appreciated. Thanks, DC

I have an Extreme from Montrose trailers. All aluminum, very light, enclosed, pulls perfectly, low profile for great mileage. Their website is www.montrosetrailers.com.

If you will tell them you are from that other cobra forum...I think Wayne Presley has negotiated a discount based on his posting of Ultimate Cobra Trailer.

I suggest the CT-8045 with electric brakes on both axles. Had one, sold it for an enclosed trailer. Should have kept it....Enough said........

Hi Phil,
Not sure yet. I'm going to speak with the guy who made it for me, figure in price of raw materials/labor to replace it today, with electric brakes, drop axles option, extended ramps, taking a reasonable % off to make a good deal for someone I/we know, hopefully I've only towed with it 8 times now since it was new. I wish I could keep it actually, because It's setup to snap in brakets to haul two motorcycles and quads too.

Send me an email if you need it, as I'm trying to figure out how to do the next one...if possible. DC

1000 lbs---how many dollars????

I would start off with a pair of torsion flex axles---best riding,most effsihant mounting
probably use some 2x6 retangle tubing for an perimeter frame, drop to 4 inch across rear for a slight droop,use 1 1/2 x 4 for inner rails and some aluminum for the runners with support under the wheel areas. use some earlier 14 in wheels so fender doesn't need to be too high

you will be pushing the 1000lb limit but its do able

Look up "mulv" on the CC site and drop him a PM. He had developed a very light weight trailer. He might be able to steer you in the right direction for design.
