Street Legal!
Phew, phew..PHEW! Finally made it past the CHP for a VIN, the BAR for my SMOG, and the DMV for my license and registration with 7 days to spare on my 2008 SB100 exemption!
Had to put the body on the chassis to satisfy the CHP and now it looks like I might have to take it off to revamp the cooling system...the 15" fan with shroud on my 28 x 17" radiator just ain't cutting it for the 533 BB Ford I shoehorned into the engine compartment ... omg...what was I THINKING?
Hope to see you all when the car runs cool enough...I'll be watching this site for future meeting announcements.
Dirk

Actually I got my SB100 exemption on the 2nd of January 2008 and had until the end of December 2008 to get the car through the hoops at those departments....problems slowed my build down but CHP insisted on a roadworthy working vehicle or they'd not allow a VIN so I trailered it in there and they accepted it as complete without asking me to drive it. The BAR, however, required me to drive it off the trailer and around to the back of their testing station, into their garage and onto the rollers for them. It was the first drive I'd taken it on as the build hasn't been fine-tuned but I did as I had to in order to get my registration done before the year expired. Now it's tougher to work on with the body on but thank goodness the body man was able to accommodate my wishes and built a custom quick-release at the front of the hood so I can at least have it off to work on the engine. That BB Ford 533 requires more cooling than the setup that came with the car though, so now I'm looking for practical ways to improve it.
Hope to see some of you for breakfast sometime if I ever get this toy up and running to my satisfaction!!
Thanks for the reply
Dirk

Congratulations Dirk!
I was under the impression that once you had your SB100 sequence number you weren't under any time requirements to complete your registration.

Dirk, I was in a similar situation. I got my SB100 in January 2008 and due to some health issues I didn't have my car completed by December 31st. I contacted the SB100 people in Sacramento and they assured me that there was no time limit to complete the car or the process and I could finish it in 2009 or later for that matter. Did I receive bad information? Who told you it had to be completed by Dec. 31, 2008? Thanks.

Don't tell me it's so!!!:(
One of my friends who works in DMV told me I had a twelve month window of opportunity...man what a lot of pressure that put on me to get it done! AND I wish I didn't have the body all riveted on now....so much yet to fine tune and so much harder to get at anything. Took me an hour and a few busted knuckles to finagle the low pressure return fitting off of the steering rack. Yesterday I removed the hood and it's much easier to get at now...but still the radiator / fan combo is not handling the engine heat at idle at all. I've troubleshot the other parts of the cooling system and it's working fine, including the gauge. I'm looking to replace the fan alone to increase flow through, as the one I have on there is just 8 flat blades and some of the curved bladed fans are claimed to pull more cfm. Otherwise I'd have to remove the shroud which won't come through the bottom due to frame members and might only come out the top if I remove a TON of installed goodies to make room. It's that or remove the body.... ergo if it's true I had no time limit I'd have proofdriven the thing til no improvements were required before getting the body on.... Haha! On the other hand, without the pressure to get the project done it might still be sitting in the garage wistfully awaiting my attention! I have yet to begin on the interior installation.
Anyhow thanks for the posted replies...like most Cobra owners I'll just do whatever it takes to get 'er up and running....the two times I had it on the road were a BLAST
Dirk

Dirk. I have a 533 and I added a puller fan behind the Radiator to supplement the two pushers in front which are useless. Works fine no problems. Good luck with your new Cobra
