The 31xx series had perhaps the most ‘changes’ within the series. The first eight used comp/SC bodies that remained at AC from the 30xx series. Then 16 or so had wide rear flairs, the next 34 had narrow rear flairs and than back to wide rear flares.

Lower CSX numbers not sold by late 1966 were ‘updated to 1967 models and they received ‘new’ MSOs specifying that they were 1967 models. The footbox tag was updated with 67- preceding the CSX number.

Thanks for clearing that up, I wondered about how they managed to change title years legally. On body styles I ordered my 3100 series with extra wide flares because I wanted to use the relatively wide 15" dia. tires (Can Am I think) that could be purchased then, so there is effectively one more difference for 31xx. The SC's had a turned out lip but the inside dimensions of the actual fenders were not wide enough for 11.5" wide tires unless you jacked the car up and ruined the geometry.

The whole issue of model year designation with Cobras (at least 427 cars, anyway) seems to be a bit hokey, since they appear to have been categorized mainly to coincide with the model year then being sold by the big car manufacturers (ie; after about September or October buyers were expecting to see the next year's cars)......a marketing thing. I recall my car had 1965 on one of the documents, which was then x'd out and "1966" was typed in above it since it ended up arriving at the dealer in about September '65. As Jim has explained, the chassis number range is a far more meaningful parameter.
