Got Tags WA Tags Yesterday
Got my WA state tags yesterday (titled as 1965 Ford) but have to go back in 3-4 weeks to get the collector tags. Seems here you have to active tabs in order to get collector plates and when they tried to do both yesterday the collector tags go rejected as the title was not yet processed.

Yes, just moved to Kirkand from Austin TX, so I got the car registered in Texas as 65, so titled carried over in Washington as 65.
Buy the way the fees are high here for registratrion (in King County and there is the RTA Tax).

High? Should have been here 10+ years ago. I was paying over $3000.00 a year for tags on 3 cars.

The license on my new Corvette was $2500 a year back then. Now they would only be $40 a year. Now I have 3 cars registered with "restoration plates", including the Cobra, which means no annual license.

My 4 vehicles were $700 to register, in Texas it was about $70 per car, so out of of the 700 about $40 per car one time fees (title transfer, etc), the Cobra was $90 so that one will go away as I don't have any yearly fees, so it will be $480 vs the $280 I was paying in Texas. Oh well some one has to pay for the light rail here in Seattle

Just as important is there is only a rear plate for the restoration (aka collectors) plates, so nothing to ugly up the front of my snake.
BTW, my 36' motor-home ran over $4500/yr back then, with the corvette at over $2000.00 I was paying more on my motor vehicle yearly taxes than my primary home's property taxes.
Welcome to Washington, now just stop the rain. :-)
Cheers,
Kevin

I'm spending my life in front of my computer searching for a Cobra. I called the WA DMV to hear since it was a "kit" car, there were no limits on year made/titled. Since I live in Whatcom Co, there are no smog checks. I was thinking of a personalized tag at around $80/yr, but how much and what are the advantages of the collector tag? I suppose for the collector tag it would have to be registered as an older car? I'm thinking Superformance. I suppose if I ever sell it, I would want the registration to say '65 or earlier. Thoughts appreciated.

If it is new...it will have a MSO and be registered and titled with the year it was made as a RCOBR (Replica Cobra ?) using the SPO number as a VIN....there is some confusion at local licence departments but if they contact Olympia they have pretty much figured this all out...it is not a kit car so it does not have to be inspected by the WSP....nor do you want it to be registered as such because when you insure it, that will eliminate "some" of the confusion and the need for a appraisal.... the insurance company may accept the bills of sale to determine value and must know that there are parts available in case of a claim and so Superformance is a good choice as they have a dealer network and parts available....they do not like kit cars...the car will not be eligible as a historic or collector car (unless it was previously titled as such) and will have to have a front plate BUT, I have not mounted mine and have had several encounters with the law and they have not said anything as yet...if it is a used car, I suspect it will just be a simple transfer of data. In any case you will need a speedo statement of current mileage. At least that is how it went with me. Knowing what I know now, given the market and the risk of a deposit and the wait and the debugging of a new car....I would definetly buy a late model clear title clean carfax used one and save $10-15 k...new is a pain in the ass ..IMHO....good luck..

The only cars that need a WSP inspection are previously titled, out of state cars. Kit cars DO NOT need an inspection.

I don't thinlk WSP do out of state inspections anymore. I got 3 cars registered from out of state without inspections. You are right about kit cars not needing an inspection as long as you've got an MSO.

My definition of inspection == Emissions Inspection, as that is all that is required for certian cars now
