Default Carb tuning

I have FMS crate 302 with 4bbl carb that has never been tuned. I am no good with carbs. So I am looking for someone in the Portland area to dial it in and get it running good. I looked into dyno testing at Fast Specialties, anyone used them? Is dyno tuning worth $400 to get things dialed in?

Thanks for any input, Jim

$400 If you lived close to Tacoma, Bill's Tune-up Center puts them on the chassis dyno. for about $75.

Unless you're wanting to break in the engine and see how much power it makes, that's too much money to spend on tuning a carb.

Wait until you get it in the car, then buy one of the local Cobra guys lunch and let them dial it in for you.

I've been to Bills Dyno tune. They are mostly set for emissions. There was no provisions to tie the car down and he could only test up to about sixty hp. They do appear to be good with carbs. I had to go through five test periods. I tried them on my own to improve idle emissinon. The stste is looking for you to make an improvement in your emissions not so much performance. I usually had to spend the $150 with a liescenced emissions repairer. My car is now over the twenty five year and doesn't need to be tested evey other year. My problem was my cruise was almost within standards but Idle was almost 11 time the limit.
I had Stallion Racing Componets build me a pair of primary metering plates machined and for screw in drilled brass set screws in the air bleeds and idle ciecuits, drilled small for starters. I have to use the choke for initial startup on most days. He made me a jig for drilling more set screws for other sizes. The garage doesn't stink quite as bad after sart up.

I've been to Bill's with my Cobra and '38 Chevy. Trick is, they have a "independent contractor", a carb guy (doing it for 40 or more years). He doesn't "work" there, he is semi-retired. If you ask, they will give you his number then you schedule the tune with him and he comes in to the shop and sets you up. I was very happy. The Cobra he said was almost perfect so he set it and didn't charge me anything. I think it was about $75 for the Chevy

Depending on what carb you have..........call their tech line. I have a Edelebrock (Carter) 750 CFM on my 460 and all I did was call the tech line, told them engine, cam, trans, rear gear, tire size and weight of the car and they told me what jets and needles to start with. When I did go and have it dynoed, they said it was right on the money.
