I am about to bring in a SP car from out of state. Purchasing this weekend.

The state it is coming from has it registered as a 1999 Kit. . and the state assigned their own VIN number.

I have the bill of sale the current owner received (when he bought it two years ago) saying it was a 1965 Ford Cobra and the VIN was the SP Vin number.

I will have the current owner do a notarized bill of sale stating both Vin's and identifying as a 1965 Ford Cobra.

Any chance, since this car is coming out of state, and I have iron clad proof that it was not stolen, to have the title done properly to begin with (as a 1965) . . . or will I need to bring it into the state as a 1999 and then do the Washington State Patrol dance to have it retitled?

I appreciate any guidance. Thanks!

The State goes by title, not bill of sale. You are going to have to go through the visual inspection procedure. Mine was titled out of Kansas when I got it.

I agree with Mastiff. It's unlikely a licensing office will change your year if it's from out of state. I wouldn't get it titled as a 1999 in WA first. Just get the WA state patrol inpection done first with the 1965 custom car notation. Then take that to the licensing office.

Car will reside in Lake Stevens. So Marysville will be my closest WSP location.

What I don't want to do is title it twice . . once as a 1999 KIT (Colorado designation) and then to re-title as 1965 Ford Cobra.

I do have a bill of sale from the first owner (I am buying it from the second owner) which clearly says 1965 Ford Cobra . . . but I suppose the current title would take precedence.

Sounds like maybe a trip permit (to get it to WSP as I will not have any plates) have it inspected, and then bring the entire package to get it titled / registered at the same time at my less than friendly license location.

I appreciate everyones insight, council and help.

I just stopped by the WSP inspection station in Puyallup a week ago Friday when I purchased my Contemporary 289 FIA. I was advised they had a 3 plus week appointment needed. They also said Bellevue was almost 2 weeks out for an appointment also.

Does anyone recommend one inspection station over another?

Thanks.
