Unhappy Curse you Zderf:

Why did you have to go and blow out your rear end. If you had only kept your foot out of it, my life would be so much better (Cheaper) now.

After your "problem", I got serious about having a look at what was going on in the third member. There is a very good shop here in town called "Virge's"and Ray, the owner does a lot of custom work and is well thought of. He incidently does all his rear end work through Dan at N.W. Diff, where you got your work done.

What we found was pretty much the same thing you found and what I fear a lot of folks will find if they look closely. We have to replace nearly everthing. The stuff that was in there was your basic Junk Yard ,"That oughta work Bob" kind of parts. Badly worn and mismatched. The "posi" was only "somewhat" sure of itself and was living in a bath of lube that was totally wrong. The gears were chipped and worn etc. etc. ad nausium.

So the whole thing will be new with 31 spline axles (hardened). Even am throwing caution to the wind and installing a new Rack and Pinion so the car will perhaps steer better! As you said, the next owner will be getting a very good car.

Happy Holidays everyone,

Bish

Default Question(s)

Bish,

If you don't mind me asking, what type of rear end are you two using?

Also, you never gave a pinewood derby recap!

Regards,
Mike

Unhappy OOOps

Bish,

I am so so sorry. I wish I had not mentioned what happened to me, and what great service I got from Dan at NWD. For that, I apologize immensely.

Please forgive me, but only after re-visiting this post:

Awesome Differential Support

Sorry sorry sorry, you too had a P/O........

Zderf

Mike

The unit that is going in now is a " Tru-Trac" (same as Zderf's)and according to my guy here and to Dan at NWD it is the only unit that is truely "bullet proof" in a Cobra. We are going to oversized (can't tell you how much oversize right now) and 31 spline hardened axles. The old axles were 28 spline and un-hardened. Again, according these guys, who really seem to know what they are about, the 31 spline is the only way to go as is the TruTrac. They tell me that no matter what I do or how hard the car "digs in", I ain't gonna bust anything and I don't have to give it another thought. Strong words, but I have seen the cars these guys build and race which are a lot heavier and more powerful than mine and they never break in back of the transmission.

Breaking News

My grandson finished third over all in the Pinewood Derby. He got a trophy and was absolutely thrilled.N ow, in his eyes, Grampa wears blue tights and has a red cape!

Zderf

This P/O blues crap is starting to get expensive! Another $1600.00. The rear end was obviously a Junk Yard part. I have now replaced nearly everthing except for, dare I say it, the Transmission. Oh well, what the hell, it's just a hobby, right? Like you, there go the leather seats, for the next season anyway.

Happy days,

Bish

You know I always read about the aftermarket axels with more splines for more strength. Lots of people make them, but where do you get the spider gears to match the splines??? No one ever mentions that. Do the axels come WITH the new spider gears?

bish,
there are a few of us who already know that you wear tights and a cape, however i'm a little suprised that you would let your grandson in on this fetish. You are a little more open with this than I would have expected. But, fine, I'm just glad you are becomming comfortable with the life style (as well as the tights)

In order to change to the 31 spline axles, I found out, you need to redo the the rear end. It requires a new carrier, which is the guts of the rear end and the 31 spline gears are contained therein. That unit costs $500. +/- and the axles go for around $200. per copy. It's not an inexpensive mod when you add in labor. However, from what I have discovered in this drill, the 28 spline, unhardened set up will eventually get you into trouble. In a way I was lucky, we found the problem before a breakdown. Zderf was out toolin' around when he busted his.

Vincent

Always the critic. Hey send me you e-mail address. I need to forward you something. I have been using the e-mail function here and I don't know how to or if you can fwd with it.

For those of you with Jag type IRS systems, check this complete replacement rear end out. If it is well made, it would be an excellent system. If anyone has one, let us know.

9 inch Ford rear ends rock!!
