Whistler
Gloria and I just cancelled our reservations. The smoke up there is something my lung can't handle. Also my back went out yesterday. It just isn't my week. Hope everyone has a good time.

Dale,
We will miss you two for sure, but totally the smart move for anyone with respiratory challenges. Looks like we have until 4pm to cancel today, without penalty of a nights room fee.

Dang, Fred and Brenda are out as well. We will miss everyone that will not be joining in. We will still have a large group heading north. As for a Sat. Agenda, I am thinking a 10 am drive that will be a couple hours long. We can discuss that once we all get together. Then a group dinner on Sat. Night..

....just a heads up, in the spirit of avoiding a conga line of cobras lost in Ferndale, the Pilot Gas stop is *east* of I-5 and not visible from the freeway. Take the Main Street offramp, get in the off ramp left lane, and when you get to the signal, turn left. Turning right goes down town.
At the Pilot, there's food available, a McDonalds, ATM and 12 pumps and ample parking.

Hey Bruce, happy to do that- depends if you want a scenic longer route, or just want to get to whistler. I'd meet you at the border to do the scenic option, but meet you in West Vancouver if you do the highway route.
If you do the highway route its pretty hard to go wrong from the border. If you want a more scenic tour, through downtown vancouver, with a loop through stanley park and via west vancouver marine drive windy route for example, I can do that.
If you want to discuss in detail, feel free to call me 604-671-3498. That way, I can pre-plan a route, and give everyone a copy of it in case someone gets separated at traffic lights etc. Cheers!

suggested scenic route, from the US/Canada border truck crossing to lions bay (where I live and we would stop to pick up my wife). https://goo.gl/0qg5rJ
This route would add about 1.5 hours to the direct highway route. Loops out to Point Grey, around UBC University, through downtown Vancouver, around Stanley Park, through West Vancouver to horseshoe bay via the windy marine drive route.

Definitely smoky, but not really bad. There are a couple of big forest fires burning in the pemberton area about 2 hours north of whistler. Here's the forest fire map: http://apps.gov.bc.ca/pub/dmf-viewer...84402955244847

As much as I would like to do the scenic route....I am thinking we should head straight up do to the mileage we are driving for the day. Adding another hour and a half is a deal killer. Let's stick with direct

When I jump on the Snake for a tool... I'm in to ride ride ride, so we're as flexible as Gumby.
What makes my decision is knowing how many stoplights are part of the scenic route via Richmond/Vancouver. Looks like we skirt downtown Vancouver, so that must eliminate 100 lights alone, but how many in Richmond? My limits get stressed with the "Crosstown Traffic Syndrome" when more than a light every 3 to 4 miles. :-)

Joining from the Canada side
Hi,
Looks like I can join the parade Friday from the Canada side.
I hope everyone can get out of Vancouver downtown before 3pm as it gets ugly and left turn restrictions take effect.
If everyone gets over the border by noon, a nice drive is around UBC and down to Spanish Banks to gather at the beach before crossing Burrard Bridge into downtown.

I agree with Jake. From Tacoma to the border we're going to have flat butts. I recommend the direct shorter route around Vacouver. We'll be hitting the roads Saturday morning to see the scenery.

OK, makes sense to me. I will meet you all in West Vancouver- are you stopping at horseshoe bay still?

Yep 128 miles on the glorious I-5 corridor in a Cobra is not my favorite route, coupled with 190km in Canada (much nicer) will do that to ya for sure! Bend me and flex me, that's Gumby. We're in.
Not sure if we'll backtrack from Podunk to Lynnwood, Chuckanut Drive must be out too, alas visibility is about 8-10 miles anyway. We may catch you all on the Interstate-5 tarmack further north.
