Winthrop Overnighter
OK… Based on feedback from our get together at the Redhook Brewery it sounds like quite a few folks were interested in the Winthrop run. Recall here is what I was thinking:
Overnighter to Winthrop – Suggested plan is to leave North Bend, WA, 203 North to 2. Take 2 East through Leavenworth. Continue east to 97 and head North to 153. 153 to Winthrop (total miles day 1 - 234). From Winthrop take 20 West to 9. Take 9 South to 2 East. Take 2 East to 203 and 203 back to North Bend (total miles day 2 – 222 miles). I figure a Saturday to Sunday sometime in August.
I am sure I'll change teh ride a bit to make it more interesting...
Folks suggested after Labor Day would be a good time to go. So I am going to pick a weekend – September 13/14, 2003.
Can I get a show of hands who is interested and if the dates work?
Based on the feedback I will search for a place to stay overnight and try to work out a deal/block of rooms.

Sept sounds good for me,Stephen.
Sorry to have missed the Red Hook, must have being a good time. We've had a lot to deal with for the past while as my mum had a stroke Xmas eve and passed away Jan 3. Slowly getting back to normal.
Hope to do a few NW events this year, The rumble of the pipes is good therapy.
Perry.

Excellent! As you check on accomodations, look into Sun Mountain Lodge. Beautiful place...pricey, but off-season, group rates might be attractive.

Steve, the run sounds great to Diana and I - I agree with Walt- Sun Mt. Lodge would be a great place if you could get a group rate.

I talked it over with Pat and we are excited. Count us in. The weather should be great in September.

I thought I would bring this tread up top. I contacted the lodge that was suggested. Boy it looks really nice.
www.sunmountainlodge.com
Since September is "in season", the group rate that I got for the weekend overnight is $175.
I thought I would ask if I should continue to shop for other places or is this place fine with everyone.

Nice place Stephen, a little rich for us Canucks, that's $265 plus gas and food, about a $400 overnighter !

Hey Steve,
$175 is just a tad more than I WANT to pay. If there is nothing else, then I guess that's what we will do.

We could always stay in Winthrop and motor up to sunmtn. for dinner. They have a great restaurant with a panoramic mountain view.

OK.. I agree with all of you that it is a bit steep. I like Walt's suggestion for dinner.
I'll look for other places in the area and post my research.

I am very envious of you guys. I used to live in Oregon, and have visited Winthrop/Sun Mountain Lodge a few times. It is an absolutely fantastic place. Yep, it is more expensive than a Motel 6 but, it is worth every penny! Plus, it is very private up there, no security concerns for your cars (big plus) you can leave your cars up there unattened and not worry a bit, great restaurant, very nice rooms. Also, spouses will love it, face it, these cars are mostly for us. Spouses come along 'cause they want to spend time with us, and they realize how much we love our cars. Sure they like the car too but it's usually not the same. Think about it, give your wives a treat, take 'em to Sun Mountain Lodge, they will love you for it, and enjoy the Cobra experience that much more.

Based on Lee's recommendation I have reserved a block of 15 rooms at the Best Western Cascade Inn. The block frees up on August 13th so make your reservations early.
It sounds like they have hosted a number of car clubs in the past. Here is their address and phone number:
Best Western Cascade Inn
960 Highway 20
Winthrop, WA, 98862, USA
1-800-468-6754
The group rate is $109.00 USD. Mention the block of rooms under the “NW Cobra Club”. Check-in date is September 13.
I have never been up to Winthrop. Many folks have been telling me that it is a great drive. I’ll investigate some excursions off the beaten path. My understanding is that this is the prime season so weather should be good.
See you all there! Steve

Just a quick note - Use the number in my thread above and not the number referenced in Lee's thread. It is a direct line to the place and will be cheaper.

Got a call from the hotel chain. They pulled the rooms for some apparent reason. So I am searching for a place again.

Stephen,
Just got back from Winthrop. Checked with the Winthrop Inn, they're on the same stretch of road as the BW (main drag into town from the "south"). The 13th of Sept is available for a group. This is a nicer place than the BW. It has paved drive and parking not visible from the highway, a pool, volley ball net, two gas BBQ grilles, a beautiful lawn area and picnic tables. There is a "super market" next door with just about any supplies we might need. The owners, Gene and Jane Westlund are VERY car friendly. They host the Ferrari club, the Vette club, and several antique car and bike clubs, so they're used to our kind of people. They quoted me $85 for one queen bed, $90 for two queen beds. I didn't secure the date because I wasn't sure there was still interest. Their number is 800-444-1972 and know us as the "Cobra Club". You can call them, or I can if you wish, and if there is still sufficient interest.
