Nobody's that old>>>
The other Fred,
Who you kidding? Nobody I know in NWCC has a stinking AARP card. That's for old people.
I feel better when they say "AAA" discount or "Government Employee" discount, or "Professor" discount.

Hi Fred.
My name is Dick Calhoun. I live in Jacksonville Oregon which is a bedroom community of Medford. I am very familiar with Southern Oregon and the Southern Oregon Coast. I may be able to give you some advice for that part of your trip. I might join your group for part of the cruise down here. Regarding you plan to go from Gold Beach to Bend in one day my be difficult. I'm not familiar with 595 out of Gold Beach but I am assuming it goes east through the Siskiyou national forest. Roads throught these mountains are primative at best. Some may even be gravel. It's not a route that people would take normally unless you are hunting deer. Gold Beach is about a 3.5 to 4 hour drive to Medford, then another 3.5 to 4 hour drive to Bend. The jet boats to Paradise Lodge should not be missed. But you might consider going back north a little and go east to Coquille and hyw 42 to Roseburg. Then up 138 (Umpqua river) to Crater Lake which is a must see. 138 is a beautiful drive with many water falls. Then from Crater Lake to Bend. You might even consider spending the night at Crater Lake, but that could be a little expense. Probably $130 or so in the beautiful Lodge. This route would save you a fair amount of driving time. Or, you could go south from Gold Beach, cut across at Brookings to Medford and Crater Lake. But I don't think you could make it all the way to Bend that day unless you drive very hard. Food for thought. Let me know if you want more info or specifics. I am out of town for the next 10 days, but when I get back I would be more than happy to help. I will check this site in about 10 days.
Cheers
Dick

Gravel road
I am also not real excited with the thought of turning my cobra into a rally car. The thought of it kind of reminds me of an episode of the Dukes of Hazard.
My two cents, Jake

I was thinking of going on a road trip and I was wondering if anyone else worries about having their car stolen while they are sleeping ?

ERA 469, I have a battery cut off switch that is keyed and in a locked location on my car. The car thieves would be hard pressed to get it running without drawing a lot of attention to themselves. The only way around that is to pull up with a ramp truck and then you could be down the road in a few minutes. If the thieves want it that bad they will get it anyway. That is what insurance is for. The risk one takes is worth the fun you will have on the trip. There is no doubt that my car would be safer in my locked and alarmed garage, but what fun is that. If all else fails... park next to the nicest cobra on the trip and the bad guy will most likely steal that one over your car.

Perry...
Glad to hear you guys are a go. See you in Bend!
To all...
I can echo Richard's comment about the drive from Roseburg on Hwy 138 east to Hwy 97. It's really a nice road, very scenic. There's a great little place to stop for lunch at Steamboat. Once you're on 97 it's a fairly short hop north to Bend.

Made a few phone call and Hi-way 595 is paved but they have wash outs so we will avoid that road and back track to Coquille and take Hi-way 42 to Roseburg and then 138 to 97 and on into Bend.

Holli and I would be happy to host a BBQ at our home if it fits into the travel plans, we live just off hwy 22( the road from Salem to Bend). We also are planning to have the Cobra done in time to join up with you all somewhere on the trip.

Hey K
What is that posted picture. You aren't going to put it into ol' Blue are you?
Are you guys going to Oregon?
How about a lunch one of these weekends. The only one I ever get to see is "Slabless in Gig Harbor". He is talking up some foreign thing that we may never get to see. After all if you remember we had to wait for two years just to see the JCF Slabside.

I am hoping to come down to Bend for the last leg of your Trip. Is any one else from the Portland area just doing the Bend portion on the 7/16-17?
