Dyno day
NWCC dyno day was a blast. There were some surprises and a few startling revelations. It was great to see everybody again.
I posted some pics here: http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/s...ssword=&page=1
Do you know what your secondaries are doing tonight?

You Don't Want to Know...
At the end of the day... Rich was the only really-happy camper. (Scared fecesless, however). The rest of us had fun... it was mostly a day of discovery. Wanna talk rich? (and I don't mean USD). Every one of us (except Mr Mustang) were blowing copious amounts of raw fuel outta the pipes (some more than others... shhhhh).
Speaking of discovery, I'm happy to have logged 19 BHP and 22 ft lbs of torque (just behind Keith), since they discovered that my secondaries have never opened a day in thier lives.. Welp, off to the tuner for a week and goodbye to 10MPG and my 305 BFG Euro T/A's.
FYI; the Super Charged Mustang Cobra kicked everyone's A$$. 425 ++ HP and Ft Lbs, and thats after he blew 30 HP on the passenger seat laptop during his pre-dyno set up.
An awesome day was had by all. WAY TOO MUCH fun. We plan on setting up another one perhaps next year. Next time with a full-blown BBQ and malted beverages in the parking lot (think tail gate party) during the festivites. That is a regular venue with some of the other car clubs.
Rich brings forth an interesting observation.... which I really didn't notice at the event. EVERYONE was steering the "strapped down" units during the runs. Wish I had noticed.. pretty funny actually.
I ain't posting no numbers... I'll leave that to those who wish to share thier own personal horrors.
Best personal regards,
Pssst.... want outta-the-box power? Buy a 4.6 litre Super Charged Cobra Mustang. (Damn)

Good Day EH !
Fred,
Sounds like you all had FUN , and finding what's not right and how to set up car is the reason you go to the dyno, numbers are just for braggin, they're overrated anyway. Pretty impressive 2 barrel you have, I can see alot of tickets in your future with 4 barrels!
Supercharged cars are fun but can't directly compare them.
let me know if you "tailgaters " are going again.
Perry.

I was a little unhappy with 320 HP & 380 TQ. But with carb adjustments, distributor re-curve & timing adjustments I should be able to add 40 to both numbers. Without a dynotune it's amazing to think how many motors are runnung well below their
potential. We all had a great time. Thanks to Fred for setting this up.

Perry, we made a pact that what happens at dyno day stays at dyno day, so I’ll leave it to everyone else to post their numbers.
I went near the end of the group and the majority of those who preceded me had a lot of, what the diplomatic dyno operator referred to as, “hidden horsepower left in their engines”. I was expecting the worst, but my little un-stroked, un-bored 302 put out some fairly respectable numbers; 278rwhp and 276rwt at 6200rpm.
The whole dyno experience is pretty exciting and more than a little stressful to the initiate. You know how exhilarating it is to run your car up to six grand and bang the next gear. Now imagine 6000rpm while you’re sitting in a stationary car, especially one you have an emotional/financial bond with, and no shift in sight…you’re also inside a building and it’s loud…VERY loud…and you’re also a little giddy from all the super rich exhaust fumes you’ve been breathing all morning. The hp/torque on the cars that ran prior to me dropped off in the 4500- 5500 range, so 5500 is where I lifted on the first run. The dyno guy said, “You gotta go higher”. Next run was 6000rpm… ”Gotta go higher”. It seemed like a lifetime (these runs are done in 4th gear) to get up to 6200, but the engine pulled clean with no drama…i.e. con rods flying out of the dashboard.
Two days prior to the dyno event I changed out the primary and secondary jets, power valve, and primary squirters trying to fix a low end rich condition that’s plagued me since I put the Holley carb on the car. The change in the car’s performance was dramatic. It’s still a wee bit rich near top end, but going down one size on the sec jets should fix that. I’ve been corresponding with a Holley tech guy and he pretty much nailed the problem, as the dyno results attest to…I highly recommend them.
As an aside: the new carb parts sat on my work bench for over a month. What prompted me to finally do the work happened last week, up at Whistler, as I was pulling out the hotel parking garage (yes, there was still water sloshing around in the footwell two days after the rain). A guy and two kids were standing on the sidewalk, and the guy gives me the universal “DUDE, DO A BURNOUT!!!” gesture…you’ve seen it. Since I have no idea where my car is going to end up after a burnout and didn’t really want to take out any children, I revved up the motor instead. The biggest, ugliest, blackest cloud of smoke belched out of the side pipes and totally engulfed this poor guy and the kids. It was actually pretty impressive. I waved, drove away, and vowed to fix the carb problem before dyno day.
I’m looking forward to next year. We need more big blocks to show up...

Rich,
You have one stout small block ! You must have hit the right carb combo too, your work paid off.
Jay,
You have good torque #'s right out the box, with a little fine tuning it will really be a beast.
I saw a dyno run Sunday of a Hemi Cuda on TV, bone stock it pulled 314 HP. So the advertised 425 HP of the old muscle cars were more hype than real.
Fred,
My old 283 in a '64 nova had a cam and 2 barrel, I had the most fun with that old car, nobody beat it for the 1st block, their jaws dropped when I opened the hood to see a weenie 2 barrel on a cast iron stock intake, too much fun!
Perry.
