Default Emissions Questions

Anyone in WA with recent experience on emissions testing? I read some posts from 04' and contacted DOE. DOE says they will only hold you to 68' smog standards. I had to register my GT40 as an 08' after unsuccessfully trying 8 licensing offices including the ones recommended here. Some members say they just pay the $150 at a emissions repair shop and get a waiver, but does that really work if no cat, EGR, etc? Noticed that WA law allows street rods resembling 49' and before to get collector car plates and avoid all this crap. Contacted several SEMA listed legislators to see about including other collector replicas under this. Any advice greatly appreciated.

I went around and around on this. My car came in titled from KA as a 1998 Special Vehicle so I could do nothing about title. My problem was that I have an original 1966 Cobra engine (289) so I argued and wrote etc. that it should not be subject to emissions testing. This is apparently the last and final word on the matter (fortunately I moved to Fox Island, which although in Pierce County, is exempt from testing...go figure)

"We cannot exempt your car from the emissions testing, but I can use the most lenient standards that are on the books. In 1968 there were few if any emission control devices outside of the necessary items such as an air filter or PVC. The 1968 maximums are 900ppmHC and 6.0% CO. It is very rare that a properly built street/performance engine cannot meet those standards.
The Way it would work is for you to take your test and fail. Contact me with your readings. If they are below the 1968 maximums I would give you a pass. If not we would try to work out an adjustment strategy to get the emissions levels in line with the 1968 standards. The main thing to remember is that emissions and performance go hand in hand, if it seems to run well, it will more than likely pass the 1968 standard. I deal with most of the home-built/ kit cars. I talked to him a number of times and he seemed like a real nice guy. Hope this helps. Post how your test comes out as there are always a bunch of questions about this on here. Good luck....gotta love this State.
