The year 1972, the country is in a slump, people looking for jobs, the lines were long. I was discharged on March 17 1972. I came home with no fan
fare, no parades, in fact I had to change clothes so no one would spit on me or call me a baby killer.
I went to Ford in Dearborn, Michigan, the Rouge plant, near my hometown, looking for a job. There were probably 50 to 60 people in the room looking for work. A man came out and shouted " any veterans here" several of us put our arms up. He then shouted "those with your hands up stay all others we have no more positions available".
I had a job. Ford in my mind IS AMERICA. I will never forget that day. I only worked for 89 days, 1 day short of the proverbial 90 days and your in for life, because it was not what or where I wanted to be. But God bless Ford for picking out the veterans. If you're old enough to rememer those times you're old enough to remember how we were treated. Ford went above and beyond.

WOW. I haven't seen that one - great! I got out in January, 1971 and
there was a different attitude towards veterans then. Glad that has
changed.

Being an old guy now and having a son about that vets. age, this commerical always brings tears to my eyes. God Bless the Ford Motor Company and it's Employees and Management for building great cars and demonstrating wonderful values.
Thank them too for not taking the lastest "bail-out" and holding-on during this current down turn in our economy.

I retired in 2006. What has amazed me in the civillian world is the misconceptions. After hearing numerous times that the only people that stay in the Military are those who can't get a job in the real world I've noticed something quite different. After working in the real world for almost three years now I can say that a very large portion out there couldn't make it in the military.

I miss flying with the caliber of people the USAF has.

Couldn't have said it better myself! I retired in 98 and noticed the EXACT same thing.

That is a great commercial. I have a 05 Roush Mustang an just bought a new Ford 250 Super Duty, also have a 427 BB Superformance. Love Fords, an thanks guys for the job you did over there. Welcome Home. My brotherinlaw was a Marine over there in 67.

First of all I must say thanks to ALL in the military .....I think even though alot of us have a diff. in opinions on things , its great that the love of cars can bring us together !!!!! Maybe if all our politicians had to race cars against each other from time to time it would bring them closer together ? I also must admit that having 3 little ones and seeing that com., def. brought some tears to my eyes.. Also I dont think the dems hybrids would fair so well against our gass hogs.

Thank you sir for your service. That was my era too. I didn't have to go but know many that came back to those same circumstances. I knew a few that didn't come back.

Edit: I guess I posted before I read everyone else's replies. For all those who served, thank you.

I was at the Shelby Cafe last summer. It's a favorite hangout for a bunch of those from Nellis AFB. I bought one table's lunch. I asked that the server not say anything but they all stood up when I left so someone ratted.

Later I was in Minneapolis for a meeting. It was late and a bunch of us from work were sitting in the loungs. A Sgt. was sitting at the bar eating (the restaurant was closed). I bought his dinner. He came over to the table too.

I have made a habit of thanking anyone in a uniform I see in the airport.

It was this photo from the Rocky Mountain News (and the article that won the Pulitzer):

The Rocky shut its doors today (last issue ever). The story evolved to a book, Final Salute, that followed the Buckley Air Force Marine detachment that delivered "the knock on the door".

That brought a tear to my eye. I finished my enlistment in Sept. 1971. Can't thank those who have served and are serving enough. I also am glad Ford is not asking for a bailout. They are way ahead of the other mfgr's.
