Can anyone tell me what the process is for obtaining registration for a kit car in Ohio?

Morry ~ do you already have a title for the car?? Big difference in already having the title and just needing to get the registration changed. Let me know if I can help.

Morry ~ probably the most important thing to remember is "keep ALL of your receipts"........the Ohio State Patrol Inspection Garage will want to see ALL of them!!!!

Ohio is quite simple, straight forward and demanding that you do it by the numbers.

#1: Any kit manufacturer will supply you what is called and "MSO".
Do NOT loose this. Repeat that at least ten times.

#2: When your car is done, you simply call the State BMV office, OR if you're close, stop in at 1960 W.Broad St., Columbus. (Right off I-70 and W. Broad)

Either case simply ask them for a "Self assembeled Vehicle" permit. They will happily hand it to you, or mail it to you as soon as they get their $52.75 check from you.

They will also include a sheet with approximately ten locations that you can call for an inspection. Do NOT loose the sheet the State gives you either! When you call the inspection station to make an appointment, they will ask you for the number or registration number of your paid receipt. They will then give you an appointment to bring the car in.

You will be able to legally drive the car, with out tags, to and from the inspection. The State receipt is a temporary registration for this purpose.

Another "Don't". Don't miss you appointment, you will be cancelled out, have to pay another $52.75 and make another appointment!

Call ahead at least two weeks in advance for your inspection, most stations are backed up two to four weeks!

The ONLY paper work you will need for this inspection is:

MSO...Repeat MSO
Receipt for:
Engine, see transmission info

Transmission...and IF it is used, if at all possible have the VIN number of the car it came out of! Ie; salvage yard is required to give you this information!

Rear End... see transmission info

That's IT. Period!

When you leave the inspection the State Patrol will keep the MSO, and in turn will give you a copy of their inspection sheet.

You then take this to your local Clerks office. (Now and only now with all the receipts you can find :) ) They will keep your inspection sheet, collect for items that you had not paid tax on, ie; the kit, etc. They in turn will then issue you a clear title!

Simply take this to your local Deputy Registras office and get your tags!

Then ENJOY the heck out of your new toy and above all....WE fully expect you to be at next years DVSF !

Geesh, it took longer to type this than to do it! Serioulsy, an hour and a half should take care of the entire process.

hey Double, what's the drill for a guy like me who starts with a coupla hundred feet of tubing some aluminum sheet and a few buckets of fibreglass, you know ,builds them from scratch.

That's a goopd question! First off, they are going to want to know if you build more than one a year. :) If you say yes, and if you sell them, they are going to look straight in your eyes and ask if you have a manufacturer's license. (Federal) If you say NOPE, they are going to look straight in your eyes and ask, "why not?"

THEN, they will want every receipt under the sun, nuts bolts, frame material, and on and on. Finally, and I do mean finally they will issue you the same inspection certificate as above.

IF the FRAME is of commercial type from a commercial company one had better have an MSO!

In your case Sir, knowing the quailty of your toys, take lots of pictures. Pictures of a pile of steel...before the completed frame, and then of course the full build pic's.

Self-Assembled Vehicle Application

The only other thing some need to consider is the emissions issue. I got a "Lifetime Exemption" after jsut 5 minutes at my local EPA office (Middleburgh Heights, OH)

I gave them a photocopy of my private party sale that said my engine was a 1977. Coincidently 25 years is the cut-off for emissions requirements as well. This, despite the fact my car is titled as a 2002.

Oh yea, and another don't to add to DV's exact list that I followed last summer.

DO NOT show up for inspection with the plates from your wifes mini-van mounted on the cobra.

I can also let you in on something else exciting.

If you get the itch to drive it a little before your inspection. Just Come visit me. The clerks at the local license bureau gave me a 30 day tag with a few recipets, pics, promised ride, and the mso. They even called Columbus to verify and no-one could say yea or no, so they issued one. These are probably the same people issuing passports and visas to hijackers.

Listen to DV the man knows what he is talking about. He helped me get through it. It is actually quite a simple process.

There was one small problem when I tried to title my cobra. The blow proof bell housing on my 351 stoker covered the engine block ID number. The Ohio highway patrol inspector gave me two options 1) have a flange cut away so the ID number could be read or 2) remove the engine and bring it in with the bell housing off! We're working on the flange. I wonder if the next ime I try to race I will be told that I can't because the blow proof bell housing has been "tampered" with?!?

This will fall under the too little too late category, but my engine builder traced the block number on a piece of paper to show the OHP inspectors.
