HOW DOES THE STATE OF OKLAHOMA AFFIX a NEW VIN to REPLICAs
I have just aquired an older COBRA with no name tag. The only numbers I can find are on the front right frame rail embossed into the frame. It is a 17 digit number starting with OK. Is this typical of your state? This number is also on the title which is from Michigan. I'm just trying to get more history on the car. It was a barn find.

Sounds more like a number that the mfgr assigned to the frame/kit. Okla does assign VIN numbers, but as far as I know, they don't require it to be stamped on the right frame rail.
I've got my paperwork sent in right now, and I'm hoping that Okla will use my FFR frame number as my VIN#. Whatever number they assign as my VIN, I will have it engraved onto a small plate and rivet it to my frame, probably next to the FFR# on the frame.
I haven't been much help to you, maybe some others from Okla will reply to you.
Good luck, and congrats on the barn find!

Michigan will attach an actual number in a area that is believed to not have road exposure.
Mine is a one-time attachment with the MICHIGAN vin in the middle. Like a metalized film.
The frame number might have been from the guy who made the frame and may not relate to the car at all.
Just some guy's opinion.

There was a company here that was making Cobra's (CMC) that may have done something like that. My frame has a metal plate riveted to the right side of my frame. This is from memory: First two digits "BB" is manufacturer; second series of digits "302" was the engine I had told the builder I was going to use at the time I ordered my kit (I have since changed to an FE); the next series of numbers is the serial number assigned by the manufacturer "2504" and the last digits "OK" are I assume the original state of registration.
But these were take directly from my mso.

Oklahoma assigned a VIN to mine and then all I had to do was to have it engraved on a metal plate and rivet it to the car.
No muss, no fuss!

Thanks for all the scenario's for identifying Oklahoma cars. I am convinced that the number on my frame rail Is from the state of Oklahoma in conjunction with the manufacturer which turns out to be SC Motorcars from Jay, OK. If I'm mistaken, please let me know. Thanks again, Leon

update........I've got my VIN from Oklahoma City. I've got a Factory Five roadster. FFR etches a serial number on the frame. OKC used that serial # as my VIN#. I'm now titled as a "1965 Factory Five MkIII roadster". I have a license plate. GET THE WOMEN AND CHILDREN OFF OF THE SIDEWALKS!!
just kidding! I'm more careful than that! (but not by much!!)
