Roll bar help.....
Hey guys
I need some help understanding how the rear support bar of the roll bar work from an installation point of view. I am doing a custom 1 3/4" roll bar on my factory five and I put the 10 degree slant into it.
I need to know how I am going to get the rear leg in with that angle. I see the origionals used a outer slip tube. So does that mean the rear leg isn't actuall sitting on the frame but rather drops down to allow the roll bar to be installed, them it is slid up to the roll bar and held up in place with the bolt and not actualluy structurely attached to the frame? Seems in a rool over that bolt would shear and the roll bar would bend the distance until the back leg did come in contact with the frame.
Also, I need to know the rough angle of the rear leg kicks out from the roll bar.
Thanks

The roll bar brace on originals bolts to a bracket inside the trunk that's bolted to the frame and to the main hoop with a bolt through the slip tube.
I did a quick search but didn't find a photo I wanted but I'm sure there's one in the gallery somewhere.

BTW, original roll bar diameter was 1.5" if you're shooting for originallity.

I have good pictures of this but what I can't see in the pictures is weather or not the roll bar tube goes all the way to the frame (inside the slip tube on the bracket that bolts to the frame.) I would think that you would want the end of the support tube 'ON' the frame instaead of being held up above it by a single bolt that would shear easily in the event of a roll over that would put serious weight on the roll bar.
But that is the only way I can see to get the bar in there........
I went with 1 3/4" because I thought the 1 1/2 looked too skinny, gromets were a PITA to find for 1 3/4!

Hey Dan, I have some pics of the rear braces installed if you need anything like that. The rear brace slips down inside the lower mount and goes by the top mount. Then it slips back up on the top mount pulling it up inside the lower mount. When that is in position you bolt through the lower mount and the rear brace. So short answer yes that bolt is in double shear and that's what holds it. The top mount of the rear brace should also be offset to the car center and the rear brace is close to a 45 deg angle installed. Let me know if you need any more pics or info on it Dan.

thanks Nick
That's what I needed. I do find it alarming that that bolt is in double shear like that.... but if it kills me I won't have to worry about it again! LOL
Now when you say 45 degress, is that 45 from vertical or 45 from the already 10 slat? I think it is 45 from vertical but I'm just making sure to ask all the dumb questions......LOL
Thanks
Dan

Where did you find the gromets? I need 2 for my roll bar and it's 2". You could cut a slit in the mount on both sides and after you push the roll bar back up and bolt it then you can slide a piece of flat bar through the slit and secure it. Then you have a back-up for the roll bar and hopefully it will only take you 6 months to get over the accident instead of never.

Hey Dan a grade 8 3/8 bolt in double shear will be the last thing that fails you. I have some pictures of tested bars that will attect to that. Glad to hear that's going in. Do you have the main hoop in yet? I was talking 45 deg on the rear brace to vertical. Mock it up with a cardboard tube and stand back and look at it and see if you like it.
