On 427 cars, were they plexi-glass or glass?

I wonder what is better...seeing my Lexan windwings with a big scratch or trying to dig shards of tempered glass out of my face?
I've already done the tempered glass scenario on an old pick-up truck I restored that had vent windows in the door. Not fun.

I think you mean Safety Glass. Tempered glass is not for automotive applications.
Any local auto glass shop should be able to fab a pair of these for you if you have the original plastic versions for templates.

Typically, only the windshield is laminated glass. All the rest is tempered. Both laminated and tempered types are called "safety glass". |

There's a local shop that works with all kinds of clear plastic. I've had a couple things made there for work out of clear poly-carbonate. Would P.C. be any better than plexi-glass or Lexan? Is it all the same stuff really?

Lexan® = Polycarbonate
Plexiglas® = Acrylic
What you want is hard-coated (scratch-resistant) Lexan, although acrylic still has the superior optical qualities.

I work with acrylic in my business.....Plexiglass is a brand name of acrylic. Lexan is a brand name for polycarbonate. Although acrylic is more likely to chip, it is a bit more scratch resistant, has far superior clarity, will not yellow over time, and can be polished to it's original clarity if it is scratched. Polycarbonate is stronger and less likely to chip, but it less scratch resistant, more expensive, and will eventually yellow from the sun's UV rays. I made a pattern for the wind wings for my car and when I track down the hardware I will be making them from acrylic. Acrylic gets my vote, FWIW.......

I will add, in addition, that polycarbonate "is" available in UV resistant grades, so be sure to check on this if you are using it.

The original windwings for 289 and 427 Cobras were Plexiglas brand. They were cut from large sheets of the stuff and rarely one of the wings would have the Plexiglas logo from the corner of the sheet on the windwing.
I'll try to post a photo of such a windwing tomorrow.

For clarification, the material was Rohm & Hauss PLEXIGLAS®. The company that made the wind wings (sunvisors, bumper hoops, and lugagge racks) was AMCO™. Arkema, Inc. now owns the PLEXIGAS brand I believe.

Thanks for posting that nice photo of the original wind wing. Anyone happen to know if a company or person is making/supplying a something close to the authentic original wind wings from both a material, finish, and marking standpoint.
