When did SA switch to alternators on the assembly line?
Got to chatting with a few guys about this and we wondered when the switch took place. I saw a guy that had a 64.5 D-code Mustang 289 built in June of '64 that had a generator on it. So Ford must have been supplying engines with generators right through to the changeover to the 6-bolt blocks... maybe beyond?
Were the 289 Cobras still coming with generators through the summer/fall of '64?
I did a few searches here and I came up with nothing on this. OK experts, let's hear from you...

By design the Ford supplied wiring harnesses (street cars) and alternators were introduced when the then new specification and contract came together at CSX2201. Ford introduced alternators on various vehicles as 1963 models. The option was quite rare. I have a voltage regulator removed from a early alternator fitted Cobra that has a date code from mid 1962 on it which fits the Ford 1963 model year start up.
The first Cobras of that design set were assembled during the late 1963 calendar year. To finish your answering your question, CSX2201 through CSX2589 finished between late 1963 and mid 1965 all got the same electrical system including Ford 1963 model year design alternator.

I got this one out of a low line wrecking yard over 20 years ago for $10-$15. I laugh when I think of it, but it was just an "OLD" alternator.
It was on a 63 or 64 Mercury Montclair, the ones with the chopped off roofline and rear window that raised and lowered electricallly. By coincidence it was the same as a 289 Cobra, 42 amp. Another early application was 63 Tbird. The alternators were made by Neece. The black plastic pigtail connector is impossible to find without buying an entire engine harness. If someone knows othewise or has one they would part with....share the love.

Gee,
I have NEW ones! I can supply the harness with the correct plastic plug (the one that always got cut off and had spade/ring terminals installed when the later style alternator was used as a replacement.)
I can supply the harness, alternator plug and the plug that joins the main harness reproduced to Ford blueprints (I have them) made by a qualified electrical manufacturer. What I don't know and need to is if there is a "FoMoCo" wrap tag on the harness with the Ford engineering number. My replacement harnesses will NOT have the tag but as I have three different versions of the harnesses I want to be sure I am suppling the correct unit for the Cobra. I am pretty sure the Cobra version was either the 63 or 64 Thunderbird harness. In 1964 there were two different harnesses for the T-Bird, with and without A/C, as the Cobra would not have needed the extra feed wire for the A/C circuit I assume that was not the one. my best research indicates the 63 harness but I want to be sure. The harnesses have the grounding lug, the correct non-adheasive wrap and original type wire gauge/color and stripes.
The harnesses are $245.00 but I will take $50.00 off for the first person who wants one who can confirm the tag number for the COBRA useage, not the T-Bird, Galaxie, Mrcury, etc.
I also have a source for the correct alternators rebuilt as 60 amp units, the appearance is correct but they do not come with a pully and fan.

For CSX2201 - CSX2589 street cars all extension harnesses (turn signals, head lamps, tail lamps, radiator fan, tag lamp, and tachometer sender....some extension harnesses didn't do much but adpat a Lucas design wire plug to a Ford design) were are all from the Ford supply chain. The labels I know where there were on the under dash and engine bay main harnesses. Some low mile cars still have their labels intact. The only other label I have come across is on the Cobra unique version of the Ford truck alternator warning lamp pigtail.
Very top end restorations now typically include a least a new label for the engine bay section as it is real visible with the hood up.

I have not drawn out the main harness sections. I have laid two different reproductions on a long table side by side with originals for comparison. One was extremely close to original and as installed would be extremely hard for most people to tell wasn't a 1964 original if labels were added.

You said you had a source... not that you were selling them. You posted pricing on the harness, not the alternator...
Same thing as what Rick posted, or aftermarket repop/look-alike?

Same original alternator. They are $96.00 rebuilt with new bearings, brushes and natural finish case.
I do have the stamp that the alts had on them when new but I will need to do some digging to find it. Benn about 10 years since I have stamped one.......................

Here is the breakdown from the 2nd SAAC Registry
CSX2000 - CSX2070 built with Lucas electrical system generator
CSX2071 - CSX2200 built using Ford generators
CSX2201 - CSX2589 built using Ford alternator and Ford wiring
Cool stuff.....

Yes, the stamp is color keyed and has an engineering number. I gave all of may resto stamps to a friend and will need to check with him to see if it still exists.
I can get the alternators in a few days notice, I usded to stock them but no longer do.
No, they do not fit the generator brackets but repro alternator bracket sets are avialable.

289 Cobra Alternator Bracket and Adjusting Arm
I can provide the correct alternator bracket casting that includes the original logo and the adjusting arm. The alternators that were used on the 289 Cobras also had a large diameter pulley and fan assembly that was pressed onto the alternator shaft rather than being bolted on to it, I can alo provide these but I have very few left. I have also included photos here of the alternator bracket assembly, alternator assembly with large diameter pulley and a couple of views of the correct wiring connector. Prices etc can be found in the items I have for sale on this site.
