Default Trico vacuum washer system

OK, so i know the S/C didnt have a screen wash system, but its a legal requirement here in the UK. I could hide the bottle and use a nasty modern system, but instead i have sourced a Trico plunger button and an almost correct (original washer bottle wouldnt pass Uk regs - has to be min 1 litre capacity) NOS trico washer bottle with the vacuum unit inside the lid.

I've found out how to connect this up to the engine inlet manifold (which i dont yet have) from a Jag forum. But does anyone have any experience with this. I know it'll be rather poor perfoming. But.... im still tempted just for the 'old school' experience. alternatively i could ripout put the vacuum parts and mod it with a hidden elec motor.

any comments?

It's much better to use the electric pump. Hide it under the dash. You're putting yourself at the mercy of variable vacuum.

Hey Kevin
I agree that the electric pump is the way to go. Could you hide a pump behind the firewall and plumb the lines?

I was just looking at pumps last night on line. Now if I could only remember where that was!

Kevin,

If you work out the conversion let us know. I want to do exactly the same but am about 4 months from getting to that phase on my FFR. Carl

Carl, In the end I went old school, although it aint fitted yet (as I over-trimmed my firewall so its too small - need to make a new one).

I pulled the vacumm thing out the trico washer bottle as i couldtn work out how it was meant to work. I then attached some tube from trico washer bottle to trico plunger button to screen wash jet. Its not the best screen wash action, and you have to push the plunger quite hard, but it seems to work.

HTH

Kevin

thanks - yep, got that. came with the bottle, all NOS.

as you can see the bottle is taller than the correct item (but i got the right sticker!) - its a tight squeeze next to the footwell - and obviously too tall to actually be placed above the footwell where it should be.

Im still angry with myself for screwing up a snipe bid on ebay when a 'correct' trico size bottle came up a few weeks ago.

a post script...I just got a replacement bottle thats not as tall as the above. Can anyone tell me the correct height of the correct bottle (from top of the grey cap, excl the TRICO triangular knob on top, to the base of the white bottle)?

The original Trico washer bottle is 5 3/8" high with the grey top on it (excluding the Trico triangular knob on top).

The white tank is 1/16" shorter without the grey top.

Cheers
Greg

Now, I have finally got myself what I think are correct NOS Trico washer jets - they are a work of art compared to modern plastic tat, or even the reproduction items.

So, 427R guys, and originality aficionados.....

can you tell me the correct spacing for these with respect to distance apart, and more importantly, distance from the wiper box?

(yeah yeah, i know the S/C never had 'um, but as I have to fit a washer system for legal registration, and it rains here a lot, i went for a trico set up)

also, is there a good way of keeping the whole thing leak tight? I have to change the angle of the jet, and dont want to disturb anything till I have good information.

Just a note for anyone interested, but there seems to be quite a few of the correct size washer bottles coming up on ebay atm. Most have a totally incorrect cap (with a motor etc), but this is easily swapped for something correct (or very close) from one of the more common bottles that come up that are too tall.

I'm beginning to wonder if there was only one style top that made it into the cars. Seem to be a lot of variation.

Here is mine which Mickmate says is not entriely correct on top.
