The dipstick was in the RF corner of the timing cover. Provision in the pan is an afterthought, allowing use of a late model front cover that does not have provision for the tube for the dipstick.

May also be used as a drainback from a firewall mounted puke tank, as is done with 427's at times.

Original dip stick tubes went through the timing cover. We added the tank side bung because of late model engine timing covers without the dip stick hole.
