Default csx 4179 for sale on ebay- I have a question

I dont pretend to know a lot about original cobra's but I dont know about this one, it says it has the original motor 351 stroked to 427. I thought the originals had either 289's or big block 427's

CSX4000 cars are modern replicas...not originals.

And if it were a more authentic replica, a 427/428 FE or "big block" should be installed.

No, it is not worth $180,000, you obviously haven't been shopping around too much. It also never had an original engine, but just the first engine to be installed in the car. A stroked 351 to a 427 is a great engine as well as a series 4000 car is a very nice car.

I remember these Cobras. Shelby built some cars for a spec-racing series dubbed "The Shelby Challenge". If I remember correctly there were two types of racing Cobras. The one shown here was the 427 Cobra, but it has a stroked 351W from the factory. The 427 SO FE was considered a bit much for a spec-racer, so they opted for the stroker. I probably still have the brochure laying around. I think there was also a 289 FIA in the series as well.

So, for that Cobra and it's "racing history", the stroked 351W is correct. Also, to comply with track requirements for a racing series they had to have the full, bulky-looking roll cage.

I actually think they are pretty cool, and must be a blast to drive. $180k? I'm not sure about THAT.

Anyone else remember this series? I don't think it ever took off, at least, I never heard much about it. Hmmm, I wonder where that brochure went....

Yes, I remember the series/cars,actually saw them race a few times, the cars were fast, all racing suspension, nothing like the production cars...the series never did take off and I think no more than a dozen cars were built and sold...I also seem to remember that they came with a "crate/spec" 351-W,385hp, not a stroker motor!!!!!!!!!

to me anyway, it's nothing more than a used race car,not nearly worth what a "standard/street" 4000 series car would be worth, but that's just me........

I remember the series. I also seem to remember that the original plan was to have celebrity drivers. Something about a support series for Indy cars or something similar. Not sure why it never took off.

The cars are interesting, at least to me. They are actual race cars built by or for Shelby American. Despite the usual CSX bashing, I think all the stuff Shelby is now building will find an audience in 25 or 30 years. These will be something that the factory did that was unique. I'd like to own one. I saw a couple of them blow by me on track at the SAAC convention in Nashville a few years ago. That one looks exactly like the ones I remember.

JMHO but to me it's just a clapped out race car with no significant history. That being said, is it cool? Oh yeah I'd like to take it out and beat the piss out of it, not put it in a museum. I also have to call BS on the 850hp crap. David is right, these were built as spec racers not all out, balls to the wall, killers and would NOT have been built with an 800+ horse motor. Of course I've never owned one but I'd have to see a dyno sheet before I'd believe that. Similarly, I consider the 180k price tag down right laughable but "$$$" quite often has no common sense.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but the cold air system intrigues me. I have often wondered why we fool with the inefficient "turkey pan" system when the ducted system seen here must be SO much more effective at getting cool, dense air to the motor...although in my vision, the ducts were fed by the brake cooling scoops rather than the headlight buckets.

Does anyone else use this system?

Cheers!

Dugly

Dugly, from an operational stand point I absolutely agree, should be much more effective at supplying the engine with cool air.

According to the SAAC registry they only built eight cars (including the development mule) from a planned production run of 13.

The car looks rough. For a buck-eighty or even a mucho less......there are a lot of better/cooler options.
What did these cost new?

Was a interesting Idea. The series they were tied to fell apart and spelled the death of project. They are very fast. Kroyer built the engines which were small blocks. Shelby gave the approval to Finishline Motorsports to build the cars. Had Fiberglass body that could be pulled off and replaced if necessary. First one had two seats, the rest had one. SAAC registry has more details. Sorry for my choppy post, as usual.

Actually, Shelby never built the Challenge Racers. They were built by Finishline in Las Vegas. And yes, they were all, at one time, spec 351 motors. The series never expanded into a viable racing series due to the obvious, funding. The concept could not generate money to kick start the series. Only a handful of these cars were ever built, but there are a few under construction today. Because the series never took off, each individual owner poured more horsepower in to these cars. YES, there are some 850 hp Challenge Racers on the planet. There will be at least 3 Challenge Racers at SAAC 37 in NY running with SVRA. SAAC will not allow them to run with the original 2/3000 series because they are so much more advanced and clearly faster. You may also see a couple of them at the 50th Anniversary of Ford Cobra Shelby Reunion at the NHRA Museum at the Pomona Fairplex in Pomona, CA in April. These cars will get to run on the old 50's/60's original road course at the fairgrounds. Don't miss it!!!

wow, thanks for so much information. l wish the racing series would have taken off that would have been cool to see all those cobras running together battling it out. I agree about the asking price, but I guess If I owned one why not try and get a out of this world price for it. going to watch it and see what happens
