Default Correct Talbot Mirror ?

Hey all,
Talbot 300 jr is the correct standard mirror, correct?
Extended base or standard?
Did the 427 and 289 use the same mirror?

Depends on what you call stock. Most cars didn't get factory installed outside mirrors. Standard was no mirror. If you read the Registry it mentions Walpres brand accessory mirrors fitted to new cars. Bear in mind that SA was not always correct in what they put on invoices. Most cars got what dealers and or owners came up with and that covers just about everything available at the time.

I agree, concur, with Dan
Talbot 300 Jr or Walpress
I have to admit I have never seen a Walpress until SAAC37, now I have seen a few. They are basically Talbot 300 Jr stamped via Walpress. Almost identical in appearance.

I've seen what looks like correct stamping, mirrors and all with the 300's. Does anyone know if they were spun aluminum polished or chromed brass or both?

Every original I've seen Nick that has Talbot mirrors has been chrome brass. I know Talbot made/makes the spun aluminum one too but as far as I've seen on Cobras, they been chrome brass. I haven't seen them all though!
You sure can tell the difference in a real Talbot mirror compared to a copy when you hold one in your hand. Weight and a real feeling quality in the Talbot.

Thanks as always Dan! I've seen the Walpres mirrors as well. I just figured that was one of those "buy it where you can" situations. They are slightly different I think. A little larger lens? A little shorter body maybe? Kind of hard to size it based on memory.

Walpres brand mirrors of the type like the common Talbot brand one (both companies made more than one design in more than one size at the same time, and more variants outside of the Cobra era) seen on Cobras, 427 Cobras, and occassional GT350 perhaps are quite rare now. It took lots of looking and asking around to find one for a Cobra owner whose original invoice indicated the car originally had one. The owner of a GT40 MKI road car that was missing its original twin mirrors was told by the GT40 crowd that he was looking for Walpres mirrors and not Talbot brand ones.

The Talbot designs, at least some of them, are still being made and they sell repair parts for original 1960s mirrors also. It is so easy to get vintage or new made Talbot mirrors it is little doubt to me why so many cars now have Talbot made mirrors. New old stock 1960s made Talbot mirrors are not all that rare.

Larry,
I haven't purchased a whole mirror but I have purchased various parts to repair three each 1960s ones. Except for being new the replacement pieces were just like the old ones no longer useable.

I have seen a Talbot 300 Jr, period, with chromed brass base and dish with aluminum trim for glass. The period 300 has a smaller diameter than does the repop from what I have seen. There is only a few mm difference...

Did the same Talbot/Walpres offerings make their way onto the CSX3xxx cars, too? Such as the street 427s or any S/Cs?

Thank you for educating an ACademic.

Yes, as far as I know. I know CSX3245 has one as does CSX3260 and CSX3357. Those are all street models.

Thank you, Larry. Plenty of pics of the ones you mentioned via Google searches.

I also notice the "lip" (mirror end) of these mirrors have different orientations (based on model). Sometimes I see the thick end toward the bottom (7-8 o-clock position to the driver), while with others I see the thick end toward the top (11 o-clock). A little anal, but sourcing the correct one, and especially for the price many people are asking for NOS, is critical you think? Lots to see on eBay but there are so many variations.

Great thread, BTW. Very educational.

Talbot makes (or made?) two bases that can be used on the 300 JR, standard base and elongated base. I think (?) the standard base is what I've seen when used on most original Cobras. The Walpres mirror is slightly different. Slightly shorter in length and the mirror slightly larger though I haven't looked at two side by side.
Could what you're seeing be the mirror in different adjustment positions?
I know what you mean about NOS mirrors and their price. They are like gold!

Can anyone confirm which Talbot "Group Berlin 300" Junior mirror to purchase? I see a 3.5" (90mm) Flat vs Convex, as well as a 4" (100mm) Flat vs Convex. And is the correct measurement at the mirror portion or do you include the housing?

I'm interested if anyone knows where to find parts for these like the plastic edge rings.

Smaller diameter mirror will keep from touching body.
