Pusher Fans
 
Ive got a pusher fan kit, and it looks like the motor bodies are in shiny unpainted mild steel. In the UK climate this is going to rust in no time. So, wondering what other people have done, and what is correct? i have found 1 pic with black pusher fan motors on an original car, but most pics dont show much detail.

your suggestions?

Original pusher fan motors were actually heater blower motors from Ford.

Painted flat black or a dull semigloss should look very correct.

Ah yes... Well, according to the recent package that came in the mail from Acton Custom Enterprises today (I'm referring to the very well made reproduction Cobra 427 Chassis Instruction Book), I can speak with confidence when I tell you that the original fans were as follows:

"From chassis CSX.2167 inclusive, a Lucas electric cooling motor is
fitted, Model 3GM with large cooling blades, located ahead of radiator.

The radiator cooling fan is fully automatic and is controlled by a
thermostat switch located in the casting integral with the bottom radiator hose. No manual switch is provided.

427 Cobras are fitted with single or dual electric fans mounted behind
the radiator. Type PES.2379/4. Smiths."

I'm loving all the interesting facts within this book. Too bad it doesn't offer a good location to find the fan motors! In the absence of a time machine, just paint your fan motors gloss black and enjoy your "Smiths" fan motors!

I'm surprised your motors aren't plated or painted. I suppose that depends on application.

I've seen pictures of original cars with aftermarket rear fans, but they came out of the factory with front-mounted (single or dual) fans.

Bob - does that go for the Street car as well as S/C and Competition models?

Could your fan blades be stainless steel? See if a magnet sticks to it. If it does its steel, if not, stainless or aluminum.

As far as I know, rear fans were never factory-mounted on any car.

Pusher fans were only needed on street cars that got to sit in traffic. Comp cars didn't have fans as they didn't sit still long enough to need them. Comp cars that were used on the street, as in SC's, had the fans added as needed. They were pretty much an afterthought/aftermarket add on.

One pusher fan in the center on street cars, they used a large 6 blade aluminum fan and the Mustang blower motor as Ron said. Early cars used a Smiths motor according to the manual but I haven't seen any. 289's used the Lucas bumped box (wiper) motor.

Jeff's fans look the same as mine, from Finishline.

The blades are ali - Im polishing them up at the moment - I know it aint original, but I cant help myself. If I see ali, i got to polish - luckily I cant afford a Kirkham (geddit?) ;)

Seems most people think a semi-gloss black is right for the motors, which agrees with the very limited number of pics i can find of original cars with thos on show... so thats what they'll be.

Ive also realised ive mounted the crossbar upside down.

On a 289, the pusher fan is the same as a series one Jaguar E type so is available for a price. Motor is Lucas LG3M as noted and is silver hammertone paint. The fan is one blade and painted red. Not super effective, but I get by with it in CSX2367 since I try to keep the car totally as delivered. Living in Michigan helps, although I did OK in California except in a traffic Jam after the Laguna Seca event. I realize most of this thread is about 427s. Dave

Hi Dave, thanks for chiming in. Those early fans look like a lawn mower blade and they are worth a mention for sure. I made some you can see here.

Here are my fans, I lasercut some covers on the front of each fan to hide the pressed metal finish they came with. They're not like the originals, but I love them...

Nick - have you ever put together any packages of the single - 6 blade fan for the street version?

Hi Dan, I have made a few single pusher fan set ups and have programmed the 6 blade fan blades. They have very different shaped blades. I haven't tried my program yet.
I have also played with some tooling for the ships wheel indent on them.

I had wondered about this. I didn't think the current style of electric puller fans were in use in the mid 60s - but you never know. And I didn't realize the original street cars had a pusher fan. I guess the 289 grill and 427 splitter usually hid them quite a bit in photos.

Peter's original street car has only one fan, but I've found a couple of pictures of S/Cs (and a 4000-series) with dual fans. Who knows the logic or who got what when. **)
