Clutch Slave Cylinder assembly for 427 Cobra
I am currently looking to replacing the clutch slave cylinder, mounting plate and push rod on my 427 side oiler / top loader combination in my Kirkham because they are poor quality and not original type.
However, I cannot find any information about the original slave cylinder mounting bracket, the correct slave cylinder and push rod assembly to use.
Does anyone know detail or pictures of the original parts which were fitted to the 427 Cobras? Also, detail of where I can source the parts?
For information, I am using an original style 427 Cobra clutch fork (from David Kee transmissions), and I have a Lakewood blow proof bellhousing.
Thanks
Stuart

I don't think the poriginal type slave will work with the Lakewood. The cars used the Ford bellhousing and the slave is mounted differently than a Lakewood does.

I'm afraid I'm a little light on the originality part of this but I just went through re-doing mine. I have a Lakewood scatter shield and the original slave cylinder is a Girling. Top shelf racing stuff from the day. The mounting brackets on every set up I've seen are home made. TRW apparently bought out Girling and they have essentially killed the company. I did find a supply house in the UK that still stocks a large number of OEM Girling parts. They are PowerTrack LTD and have a web site. My slave cylinder has the following numbers associated with it - BS6 - 64677346. This is not a part number but PowerTrack cross referenced it to the correct cylinder. I bought a rebuild kit from them and they were pretty good to deal with. A new cylinder is about 56 Pounds or $100.

I had a Lakewood bell housing at one time on CSX3170 and I used the stock slave cylinder and bracket. As I recall it used a tapped hole in the block and then a bolt that retained the bell housing to the block. I now have the stock bell housing back on and that same slave cylinder and mounting bracket so I did not modify it. I can't recall if there were any adapter parts fabricated for mounting to the Lakewood but don't think there were.

A Sunbeam Tiger uses the same Slave cylinder. Repair kits are available as are new cylinder from vendors that focus on that marque. Here is one example:

There are several vendors

I think you'll find that's the American end of the whole business. Try Ford truck for a slave, I have a program for the plate bracket.

Mickmate :
The image appears to be of the Girling slave, correct?
If you have acess to machine shop, incorporating a female Rod end (Heim) joint into the clutch arm makes a sweet setup. It eliminates the ball end on the pushrod. Illustrations are in Carrol Smiths book "Prepare to Win".

Thanks guys.
I'm pretty sure I can get hold of the Girling Slave cylinder in the UK with no problems because it was common with many British cars of that period and so there are lots of companies in the UK supplying such parts for the classic car industry. However, it was slave cylinder mounting bracket, pushrod and ball end parts which I need to find details of.
Mickmate: Is the photo you showed an original set up or something you have fabricated?

That's an original set up. You can tell by the little mouse that chewed the clearance on the end of the arm for the frame rail. Looks like this one huh Rick?

Thanks Mickmate.
Where did you get the pushrod ball end from? Also, I don't suppose you could PM me the pattern for the bracket?

It can't be that expensive. Why not support small business and buy one from him? I'm just saying.

If you decide to whip out a few of the brackets, I'd like one. I'm still not happy with the alignment on my car. It works fine, but I expect it to fail some time in Dead End, Nebraska, on a Sunday night. I'd like to replace the whole ball o' wax with what you have pictured.

Nick
The push rod and ball end are very close, if not identical. The clutch arm is different.
I'd ideally like to buy a slave cyl, bracket, push rod w/ball end, return spring, and clutch arm as a package, all to fit my toploader.
Doug

You see the end of the arm has been clearanced for Cobra frame. Is that the arm you have?

No, mine has a triangular portion lopped off the end for frame clearance. Also, the dimple where the ball end of the pushrod fits has a hole in its center. I think my arm is a C8 Ford piece that I got from George at Gessford.

That should work. I'm finishing the balance of the parts now for the original set up.

The original slave on my Contemporary was from a Volvo P-1800. I switched it out to a Wilwood unit and used a 6" bolt, turned on a lathe to make the ball end of it seat into the unit. Pedal is still stiff.
