Default Cobra tool kit - the screwdriver

Hi mickmate. Does this look like the right screwdriver for the 427 tool kit?

Handle has 6 "flutes"

Can't find any manufacturers stamp or markings. (where might they be on the screwdriver?)

End of the blade looks too wide and will need to be ground to the right shape/size.

Any suggestions, as I "restore" it, as to the finish? (color, varnish, verathane etc)

Cheers
Greg

I think the handle was red on the 427's and the flutes were slightly off color

That does look pretty close. There's a good video somewhere of Colin Comer affectionately fondling Billy Weavers screwdriver, at Amelia I think.
Ron got you a good shot of the handle, all you need now is a BDS sticker.

Boy, I sure wouldn't want anyone fondling my screwdriver! Not even affectionately!

Great pics guys. Never seen an original screwdriver before. Looks like the same size and shape screwdriver as in the 289 tool kit pictured in past threads, but the color is very different.

Well I'll putter away at "restoring" the old screwdriver I've got until someone makes a reproduction available.

I found another one on e-bay Australia that is the same shape handle, new old stock never used, but it's a Phillips tip and has a more natural wood color finish on the handle. Don't know if it's a BDS.

Thanks again guys.

Cheers
Greg

Can you tell me how long this is? I may have stumbled on one.

Hi Chuck. A number of members have posted info on the screwdriver in these posts. Here is a collage of Draper catalogue extracts:

I have had a screwdriver reproduction project on the back burner for months now but other things keep getting in the way.

Good luck with your "find".

Cheers

Thanks Greg. I did see that catalog but it lists the longest screwdriver at 8" which looks shorter than the screwdriver being "manhandled" in the picture. Overall length would be great along with just the blade length if someone has it handy.

Greg et al,

Thanks for the information. I did look at that Drake catalog but it only seems to show three lengths for the screwdriver, 4", 6" and 8". The one pictured looks to be 10" or 11" so I'm still at a loss as to the correct length.

Hi Chuck. I believe the length indicated in the Draper catalogue is the shaft length, not overall length with handle.
The shaft length is measured from the tip of the blade to the bottom of the metal ferrule located at the bottom of the wooden handle.

If I "scale" the picture I believe it is an 8" shaft.
