Today's question: tank mount

The 2000-series cars had a large hole in the aluminium panel hidden behind the rear wheel, to allow access to the U-bracket holding the fuel tank in place. Could anyone tell me what diameter this was, and what was used to plug it? I big rubber plug, or was it left open?

Left open, the original tanks I have dealt with all had over spray from the sound deadener inner fender coating on them on both ends that came through the holes.

Thanks Dan, that ties in with the photos I've found. I think I'll choose a size I can get a rubber plug for, just to give a bit more protection. I know TR floor plugs are available at 2.5 and 3.25", I'll maybe go for one of those.
