Candess gas cap to body gasket
Hi all.
Can anyone tell me what kind of gasket was used to seal the base of the Candess gas cap assembly to the body on the 427 Cobra street roadsters?
I'm just using a thick o-ring, but due to the curve of the rear fender, it doesn't seal at all.
Any help would be appreciated.

I had the same problem. I deviated a little from stock appearance and browsed through the plumbing area of Home Depot and found a soft rubber, beveled washer that works very well and provided a finished appearance. I forget what the exact application was. I can probably find out if you need me to.
PS - I deviated slightly on the cap too - it has a ribbed release button.

that looks like a kohler tank to bowl seal.
i use them for my rollbar. i have a box of em. if you can't find them at the hardware store. email me.

Greg, you can also try early model MGB filler neck seal. Not 100% sure but I think it's pretty close to the original.

I think you may be right - I was afraid to say so from memory - it was in a blister pack. It's soft enough that it will grip to the neck and conform to the body. Not exactly original however.
ERA had my cap that I furnished them, mounted with an O-ring, but as My427cobra said, it didn't exactly fit the curvature of the body or look right. I don't really see how an O-ring would work or seal well - I think a thin-section grommet that extends through the opening under the body would work the best and seal reasonably well. It would almost have to be a specialty made item though.

Thanks guys. I will check out Home Depot (with DanEC's pic in hand) and the Moss Motors website for comparison.
My Candess cap has the ribbed button too. Maybe we can convince mickmate to make some extra buttons for us.

Mickmate suggested I remove my button and belt sand it smooth, polish and re-chrome it. Or he said I could send it to him and he could do it. Something to consider - it might be gone awhile until he has some parts accumulated to go to a plater. I'm thinking about sending mine to him this winter.

There are two different diameters for the filler tube. My Ceandess cap's tube fits a Triumph TR6 filler cap grommet perfectly.
I would have posted a photo, but the site keeps telling me 'upload failed' so can't.

I've already got the right button, but, that gasket/grommet with a wider groove for my thick glass car would be great.

When he told me what he got the splitter for I told him I would have got it. The trim piece on the nose is actually ally and not the correct shape. I will make the correct T shaped trim in stainless one of these days. Maybe we should do a separate thread and see what kind of smooth button group we can put together. This is the gasket thread after all......

I guess that's true. We are kind of a small, select group (427 street roadster replicas). We have to grab for attention when we can get it.

I did get an e-mail this morning that prompted me to add to this thread. The gas cap is like the roll bar rear brace hole. On originals there is no gasket just a close-ish fit between part and hole. Part of the problem is guys that pay big bucks for an original want it to look finished and trimmed out, the other is the replica guys who just want it to look nice. That often steers us away from the crude simplicity of originality.

Hi mickmate. I will always bow to your wisdom. But the grasshopper likes DanEC's gasket. Looks more "finished" and hides the base/bottom of the gas cap and seems to conform to the curve of the fender real well..
And wasn't the splitter chrome trim piece made from an early/mid 60's VW Beetle side moulding? Or was this an old wives tale?
DanEC. I might have to get that Home Depot part number from you.

Greg, The original trim was stainless steel and is in T shape with the rib projecting forward. It is formed at both ends. I bought I believe the last one from AC Cars a very long time ago. I am sure they pilfered it from another car but it wouldn't have be a VW Beetle.

I'm just a student of the hobby/obsession like you. I think AJ might be correct in that he bought the last one as I talked to another guy that got a short strip of it not quite long enough to make a splitter trim from. Not VW there's is rectangular not T shaped in two different sizes, early or late. Home depot to the rescue! I like to look at all the neat hardware pieces available in the hardware store. If there's a need for an unusual piece of hardware it's surprising what is available. It's a matter of finding applications by size or names of this stuff.
