Fuel vent pipe
Happy new year to all!
I'm installing my fuel tank. It's a stainless, going in a street 289 with the correct keyhole-shaped button Ceandess cap. The tank has a filler tube (central position), a fuel take-off at the base and the hole for the gauge sender unit. There is no vent pipe or similar to allow air in/out. The cap has a very small hole in the sealing plate that holds the rubber seal, which allows air to pass through. Is this enough, or do I need to drill and weld a tube for a vent pipe as well? What did originals have?

Which can cause problems if the tiny amount of air the original cap passes goes down for any reason. Cars with really high fuel use per hour (think stroker engines, Webers, and high speed touring long distances......or open track play) can draw a partial vacuum on the tanks. If that happens fuel flow to the engine is hampered and the tank tries to collapse. Original terne plated steel tanks are made with leaded crimped seams and leaded over "tinner's rivets". Drawing a vacuum on the tank makes the tank flex more than normal and make the leaded seals break sooner than later.
I have heard car's tanks "sucking air" just after coming off track and shutting down. Next comes the sound of the tank walls popping back into position.

Might be worth just opening up the vent hole in the cap a little?

Since you plan to consume fuel from your tank, you better have a way to allow air into your tank to keep the pressure on the tank neutral or you will have a problem. If you were actually able to suck all the gas out of a tank, the vacuum might collapse the tank. You will have to vent the tank somehow.

I'm retro fitting one of our keyhole button caps to an Aurora right now. It has a small 1/8" breather tube in the side of the neck.
Don't our caps vent through the screw hole in the middle?
On the new Shelbys they have a horseshoe shaped tube in the fill neck that draws a vacuum off the tank vent (outside of the tube) by a venturi effect (inside of the tube) from filling it. Of course my detailed explanation doesn't address your cap venting question it pertains to filling.
