Default Wiring diagram with alternator

Tricky one.
Car is a 289, 5-bolt motor, going for the nearest to original I can get.
That said, I want to use an alternator, not a generator. I'm planning to fit an early Ford (1G casing?) alternator with an external regulator. But I want to keep the charge light on the dash and the ammeter. I can find wiring diagrams for Mustangs with either charge light OR ammeter, but not both.
US -market 289s had the Ford externally-regulated alternator and retained the charge light and the ammeter, so it must be possible. Does anyone have a wiring diagram for this? I have the 'shop manual' AC diagram, but that's for a generator.

I think this makes my desired setup the same as an original 427, but may be wrong. Is there a diagram for a 427 original-spec anywhere?

The wiring diagrams sent are really helpful.
But - can anyone tell me which regulator was used? All the Ford ones I can find have 4 connections. The one in the Mk3 wiring diagram has only 3. Can anyone help with this?

the "I" connection on the regulator isn't used with an ammeter.

Thanks FWB - I do have an ignition light in addition to an ammeter. I understood 'I' to be for the ignition light, but I guess it should wired as in the Mk3 diagram?

couldn't comment on that one as i have never seen the need to have a light and an ammeter.....

Yes, seems weird, but all street Cobras had both, as in the Mk3 wiring diagram with the Ford alternator and regulator. This is what has me confused.

i have this diagram also...note this one shows a 3 wire VR but has a relay wired in too. the first one is the std ford regulator, this one is transistorized.
both come from a 1966 ford shop manual

ERA cars have both the ammeter and light. This thread: Check out of charging system has a copy of the abbreviated wiring diagram that includes both. It's not particularly difficult.

Roger, You only use three terminals. The white wire connects to the S terminal (which operates the ignition warning light), brown/green wire connects to the F terminal, brown connects to the A terminal. I am assuming you have the standard Autolite alternator control box. Do not forget to connect a ground wire to the base of the control box and run it to the engine block. The control box is mounted on a fiberglass foot box which is terrible at conductivity! AJ

Thanks guys, a lot of really helpful advice here!
It's not so easy when you're used to the Lucas alternators, which were nearly all internally regulated. I'll have to modify the harness for the Ford, and want to be sure I get it right before getting deep into this.

Just to be sure I've got this - I don't connect anything to the I terminal? And the ammeter is connected between the battery output from the alternator and the battery positive (solenoid connection)?

Sorry to repeat - I've had engine bay fires before, and I don't want another!
