Default Race cars: Fuel switch valve and fuel pumps ???

How was the fuel system setup on the race cars (with an Imperial fuel switch valve between the drivers legs)?

Did this car have TWO fuel pumps in the trunk or did they’ve only one (mechanical) after the valve in front of the Webers?

Valve and two pumps makes for me not much sense, only if both pumps did run at any time and the driver decided with the switch which fuel line to use.

Thanks for any kind of information.

289 competition cars had one mechanical pump (289 hipo pump) and one electric pump (Stewart Warner 240A), two fuel pickup points were used on the auxiliary fuel tank in the trunk at different heights on the side of the tank (main, reserve), one hose (reserve) went to the electric pump and then to the selector valve, the other fuel hose (main) went directly to the selector valve. Both hoses went to the selector valve. One hose went from the selector valve to the mechanical fuel pump at the engine, then one hose went from the mechanical fuel pump to the fuel distribution manifold on the intake manifold water outlet pipe. FYI, the mechanical pump can draw fuel threw the electric pump when the electric pump is turned off.

........we offer everything to have a fully functional system, I've been using it on my Cobra for years now. It is nice knowing that because the car is not equipped with a fuel level gauge that you have a reserve amount to switch to.

Many thanks for your interesting replay.
I did try to draw a scratch diagram out of your explanation and there is only one question left.
-Did they have a switch for the SW240 pump on the dash or was it connected to the ignition?
i.e. Driver decided to switch it on or it was on per default.

The switch was on the dash, the electric pump was primarily used as a booster pump to the mechanical pump. The main tank only transferred fuel to the auxiliary tank via a large transfer tube, there was not a fuel line that went ahead of the change-over valve. The main fuel tank had been modified by SAI so that it didn't have any fuel supply outlets except the one transfer tube. John
