So, the date code of 1743 means it was made on the 174th day of the year in either 1973, 1983, or 1993. Holley used 3 digit codes in the 60's I think.

Correct, until after the Ford Total Performance period Holley used three digit date codes. Said another way, any new car production Holley on any 1962-1970 Shelby related car will have a three digit date code. Four digit date codes are for sure on later service replacement units.

Buyers beware, there are people obtaining either new undated service bodies or welding up existing numbers on common bodies and stamping them with whatever numbers are most valuable.

Very true. I have seen 2 cases of just that in the past year being proposed as "original" LeMans carbs. Both had funny numbers and just didn't look or "feel" right. And both were asking a boat load of money for them.

Been through the same thing with "original" SU HD8 carbs in the past that proved to be total junk. Then I started reading and learning more...
