Because they moved to Wales. They are made by Caerbont Automotive Instruments and have been for some time, not sure when they changed the dials though.

Sorry to resurrect this, but I was just checking some photos and note that COB6029, the Haynes Museum's car, has 'made in England' on the minor dials but 'made in UK' on the speedo and mechanical revcounter which I'm pretty sure have not been changed. Any further thoughts welcome.

Does anybody know the correct part numbers on the face of the Smiths tachometer and speedo? Not so sure about the speedo, but the tachometer has a number immediately under the needle boss, and another under the 'RPM X 100' lettering.

This is completely correct. When I was growing up, Smiths Instruments were based in Cricklewood, North London. Nowadays, as previously stated, Caerbont are located in Wales, United Kingdom.
However, they print their own dials of course and I feel confident they would supply Made in England for you, as they do other classic car replacements.

It's got a bit more complex than that now, it seems - I rang CAI today regarding this. CAI and Speedycables are both in Abercrave and used to share an MD. Speedycables have now split from CAI and, under Andy Barraclough, are also making Smiths instruments. It was Speedycables who previously made up special instruments for me - they made a very nice Smiths mechanical water temp gauge for the Cobra with a 30 - 100 scale - so I have asked Andy if he can do these gauges for me. I'll keep you posted how this turns out.
Big thanks to AJ for coming up with the dial numbers for me.
