Thanks for all the tips and ideas guys. I'm going to think on all of that for a while.

The probability I will ever use the luggage rack to actually carry luggage is very low. However I placed the rack on the trunk yesterday at the Pismo Derelicts cars and coffee and got a lot of positive response. Fun telling people the history of the accessory.

Got these little "gutter clips" which I'll try to use for the straps from the leading edge of the luggage rack to the front edge of the trunk/boot lid.

They are already nicely coated in a red vinyl dip and with a little massaging, I'll see if they'll work with some red leather luggage rack straps I've seen on e-bay.
