Luggage rack: Part Deux
And I do mean deux.
So as I went down this path to see if I would like the concept of a luggage rack as an accessory. My first step was a search for availability and factual history.
With the help of a number of forum members, I learned the history of the AMCO luggage rack for the 427 Cobra and its relative rarity, especially the mounting hardware.
It became evident that, even if commonly available chrome carriage bolts and spacers were used, the mounting feet would have to be custom made due to the curvature/slope of the trunk lid.
And then there was the issue of drilling holes in the trunk lid.
But I digress. First I had to find one to see if I would even like it.
Well, after searching for a while, I found one. A Porsche 356 AMCO luggage rack which looks just like the AMCO luggage rack for the Cobra, but of course without the Cobra mounting hardware. Close enough for me though.
The seller was a little difficult to communicate with and we went back and forth on a price, but finally came to a deal. He was a little dodgy and slow on the shipping and then went MIA for a while so I genuinely though the deal had gone south.
Then low and behold, I found another one, much nicer, almost perfect. So I bought it.
Well you know where this is going: now I have two luggage racks.
The first one is nice. After cleaning it up it’s nice enough for my car.
The second is VERY nice. Almost concours perfect, certainly high end car show condition and deserves an original Cobra as its home.
So I will be posting the second rack for sale shortly.
Cheers
Greg
