Default rear diff

What would be the right color for an original diff from a 427 car, black or red?

Red Oxide.
As far as I know, they were all the same color.

Is it red oxide, moved over to England in July and found a place that sells cases in aluminum and cast iron, was gonna buy one in cast iron but aluminum was much cheaper. I guess the guys over here with cobras that race them can't use aluminum or magnesium anymore, so the aluminum are not selling. Gonna strip a jag rear and use the insides but want to see if I can make it look original, case is really close to the original.

Any chance you could tell us the price of a bare case. Who are they from? I have an aluminum one that I was going to paint red oxide. I could use another one. Would like iron depending on price. I have a early jag case and want to put the gut in the right type case. If you do this let us know how it goes when you do it.

Thanks

I'm going down this week to pick mine up I'll post pictures. The company is Crosthwaite & Gardiner, you can look on the website it has pictures of cases. I don't think they have any magnesium right now, I did see a bunch of cast iron.

Gerry Hawkridge makes differentials with the correct bolt bosses in the nose. Not sure what they're cast from, iron or aluminum though.
Kirkham also makes them or used to. That's what I have. Last time I checked, they were about $5500.

These cases have the 4 bolt holes on nose like originals, they look just like original. The bare cases are 1465 pounds for aluminum and I think 1550 for cast. The magnesium are about 500 more. They are for the cobras.

That's about $1900 USD. Not a bad deal! Figure $900 for a Dana44 Trak Lok carrier, say $200 for a ring and pinion set plus bearings and seals. You're in the $3100 range. Still a lot cheaper than $5500 from Kirkham.

Larry when you order an Iron one get me one too. I know you have dealt with ordering stuff from across the pond. So you know how to get it done.

No prob!
I have shipped quite a few things from England and how you get it done is deep checking account! Shipping costs are high, then you get to pay tax coming through US Customs on new parts. Hubs I got from Gerry had more stickers and stamps on the box than a NASCAR tool box! All government stuff!
Sometimes you have to pay if you're going to play in this league!

When I was at company looking at parts they told me they ship to states all the time, they said the cast iron diff was about 100 pounds to ship to states.

Thanks for posting. Are you going to put the guts from a jag in yourself? If so post pictures.

I wonder why they drill and tapped the holes on top of the case? Whose hole are not used to mount it in a cobra. I will have to look at my Kirkham case to see if there drilled and tapped.
