289 Fuel neck / cap location
I’m about to have the fuel tank made for my 289 street car. In order to have the tank’s filler neck in the correct location to connect with my Ceandess cap/neck, does anyone have measurement for the distance between the boot lid and the neck/cap?

Is it an original car, or a replica. If replica, which one? Is the fuel tank upright or flat?
Here's what mine looks like....

Mine is a replica, but I’m having a tank similar to the original 289 tank built for it. You can see the mock-up I built in this pic.

Thanks, Andrew. That’s the dimension I’m looking for.

Stacy, check this link and in one of the pictures it shows that the measurement is actually 3 1/2 inches from the body edge. That's the spacing that I used.

Stacy, here is a picture of my gas filler.

John,
Thanks for the info. I have the pic you reference in my archive and it adds to my confusion. It shows +/- 3.25” to the CENTER of the fill neck, while AndrewB’s photo shows about 3” to the EDGE of the cap (equating +/- 4.5” to the center of the neck). Since the top (when installed) is in pretty close proximity to the cap, I don’t want it to be too far forward. Furthermore, I would like to have it in a relatively correct location. Finding top view photos of original cars are somewhat rare, so I can’t find much reference material that would allow me to scale.

Well other than Mike's link I don't know what to tell you. Mike's(MAP) chassis is an original so the placement of 3 1/2" from edge to center of fill should be perfect. I suggest you don't drill the hole until you get your tank.

I’m definitely not drilling the hole until I have the tank. However, my drawing for the tank fabricator has all dimensions except how far off the tank body the filler neck extends. And, since the tank will only be able to move laterally about 1/4” after it’s installed, I want to make sure that neck extension dimension is correct. I’m hoping to pin this down by Monday so I can send them a final drawing.

If you give me a couple of hours I can get you an original 289 Cobra measurement. I just removed a tank from a street car for repairs.

Your mockup tank is pretty cool! Nice job! You could even put mounting tabs like the original has on the sides and strap it in.
