painting CSX2345
Does any one of you know why on CSX2345 the white stripes are ending IN-FRONT of the windshield and not go trough till the cockpit as on CSX2431 or CSX2385.
Or where they only too lazy to remove the windshield for the painting

That's just where they ran out of paint!
I wonder though if it had something to do with glare from the white paint on the backside of the windscreen. Ross Henry might know. He spent a lot of time researching the car.

They did pull windshields for some re-paints. CSX2367 was repainted from blue to Highlander Green before shipping to Gotham Ford to fulfill the original owner’s order for a green street Cobra. I spent quite a bit of time with the original owner, Joe, when I acquired 2367 10 years ago, and he had stories about how some of the bolt on parts weren’t tight (like the wiper escutcheons) when he test drove it. The original invoice from Gotham has handwritten notes promising to repair the paint damage.
This history may have no bearing on CSX2345’s paint story. But it is clear that the factory was willing to do extra work to get Cobra’s sold in 1964.

I think they painted these things for racing in transporters, pits and anywhere they saw fit. The paint quality is poor on this car so I would guess faster to leave windscreen on.

Color changes and or repairs to race cars were often done quick and dirty, they were not show or production cars. If you look at the front quick jacks and other bolt on items either they are completely painted in the new body color or they are heavily over sprayed with the new color. Look at the repair work on the right rear fender of 2345; the fender opening is completely misshaped. These were race cars that were often not treated as they would be today.

I think it might actually be advantageous to have the stripes end in front of the windshield. My white stripes extend all the way back and curl around to the dash. When the sun is at just the right angle, the stripes make a reflection on the windshield glass. Perhaps you can think of a time when you had papers laying on the dash of your daily driver and they interfered with your vision. If you've had this happen, you know what I'm talking about. My wife has taken some photos and videos through the windshield while we were underway, and some of them were ruined by the reflection off the stripes. Anybody else seen this?

Let’s not forget that 2345 went from Viking blue to Guards blue. I believe Trevor Legates excellent book “The truth behind the Anglo-American Legend” (I might be wrong on the title, someone borrowed mine I never got it back, has some very good examples of SAI’s paintwork on 2345.

Back to the original question of why to not continue the stripes past the windshield, as previously mentioned, driver distraction when racing...This comes right from Chuck C on one of many such conversations we had over the years.....You remember racing right, the reason the cars were originally built for .

The windshield offers a natural "break" for the striping to end, nothing more.

The big difference with 2287, it had been repainted before being sold after SAI was finished racing it. At one point when Phil Specter had it he had all the Coupes history painted on the door in gold leaf lettering.
I would have to agree with Dirty Harry about the reflection in the windshield, it an problematic.

wonder what that car would be estimated in an auction

Here is a perfect example of how the race Cobras were painted or repaired in the field.....note the rear quick jacks.
