Hey - Welcome aboard. I hope you stick around and keep us posted with the progress of the restoration. That would be interesting and appreciated by the majority of members here. Don't let the snob factor drive you away - some people here take these cars and themselves waaaay too seriously. Everyone here knows a dead on accurate nuts and bolts restoration will do more for the resale value of the car, but as you say - it's the owner's car and his money so let him do whatever the hell he wants with it. Plenty of original cars were modified to and from comp specs back in the day and beyond - repainted, roll barred and side piped and vice versa. Makes them no less interesting to me or most Cobra enthusiasts - we're not all wannabe concourse judges and Shelby American attack poodles, lol! Enjoy the hell outta your involvement with the build and stick around and share some details so we can enjoy it too. Life's way too short to get all fussed up and obsessed about stuff that should be fun. There are lots of very knowledgeable folks on here who will be happy to chime in and answer whatever questions they can.

MJ - are you in a position to be able to share more details of the car in question?
You certainly don't need to identify the car or owner if that isn't appropriate.

Incidentally, welcome to Club Cobra! We are, if nothing else, passionate about Cobras (and Cobra 'replicas')

I agree Buzz, about this person sticking around to learn. But I don't know why he can't tell us, at the very least the history of this car without giving us a CSX#, to help him with the correct era of restoration they're going for. Was it only a street car, raced sometime in its life by a privateer, or ??? It seems it would only benefit him & the owner in the end. But what do I know Cheers Tom.

Hi Tom. I'd love to hear more details as well but for understandable reasons there seems to always be a lot of secrecy and intrigue surrounding anything to do with original Cobras. Hopefully the OP will stay a while and we'll get to see/hear something interesting. It's happened so many times over the years and I just find it a terrible shame when someone comes here respectfully with some polite questions and is immediately greeted with a barrage of flack from self-styled experts and wannabe keepers of the flame just because they mention something about an original CSX car.

Yes, Cobras are rare and expensive, but so are lots of other cars. Thankfully, there are real experts and people in place to guard against forgery and fraud but outside of these issues, this HOBBY should be mainly about fun and enjoyment. The man with the means to buy and play with an original Cobra really doesn't - and shouldn't - give a hoot about some folks on a hobby forum getting all puffed up and self-important about what he's doing with HIS car. I'm sure not going to lose any sleep over it. Be nice though if the OP doesn't say screw this place (I probably would have) and stays and shares some details and hopefully some pics.

Crossed off three known "hibernation" cobras in the NE PA area, including the CSX2000 series car dragged out of a 40 or so year slumber in an old car trailer in East Stroudsburg last year. Can't be Bill C's black one in Harrisburg either, as he just finished the restoration a few years ago, rumor has it he may have already sold it, but I've yet to call him to confirm. John V's old car out of Shavertown is also off the list, never painted black to the best of my knowledge. 427 car now in SC form was white, but currently blue with white stripe, owner does not plan to sell or move it out of his finished basement any time soon. If he does, I called first dibs 20 years ago. I'll keep kicking over rocks to see what slithers out.

That's just it. If you read carefully it's not at all clear that the idea of a "restoration" is more with MJ_72 than the owner. And any real original owner knows who the go-to restoration specialists are and are unlikely (unless senile) to let a "bench racer" to lay a finger on the car.

Thanks Buzz. If we knew the car in questions history, it may help in the restoration, I would think. Maybe someone here remembers the car in its heyday. A perfect example is: CSX2129 I've spoken with owner though Email's & phone calls, he was excited to hear I had history to add to the car. My weekend @ Pacific Raceways in 1963 (@8yo I was part of the Shelby team) I wiped that car down, helped with the care & feeding though the weekend and was rewarded with a ride (@ speed) with the one & only "Mr. Ken Miles" in CSX2129. Over the years I've found 95% of the org. car owners, love to hear stories about their cars in their heyday. As Tony said he's asking questions a restorer of Cobras should already know, or have easy access to, if it was my car, I'd have concerns. Something doesn't smell right?? Buzz are you in BC or the WI? Call me if in BC, K? Brent (EM-0785) & I are thinking of doing another run of the badges (40min) We'd be up for 10-12 between us two. Cheers Tom.

Maybe I'm just the eternal optimist, but to me the idea that a regular Joe type guy with a bit of money and unknown to the elite inner circle of Cobra owners/collectors/restorers can buy an original Cobra nad kick about for information regarding a possible/maybe restoration project is less preposterous than the idea that someone would make it all up and come on here asking questions for no good reason at all. But as we've seen over the years here - stranger things can and do happen. I hope the story is genuine and we haven't run the dude off prematurely, but I suppose we'll see.

We have not run him off just yet, perhaps he just does not have anything new to contribute to this thread at the moment.

Or he is learning that even in batches as little as 5, the specifications changed from cobra to cobra since they were not actually "mass produced" but hand built, one by one. Time will tell whether he chooses to continue his education or not.

Either way, I wish him well.

Hey Tom - I'm still back and forth in limbo between here and Canada - currently on island for a month or two right now. Yep - the whole story is a bit strange but I guess it's possible that a car nut outside of the known Cobra community busted out the Amex black card and picked up a Cobra just because he's always wanted one and is now figuring out what to do (or not do) with it.
