Default Rectangular vs round tail lights

Can anyone give me any historical info on the use and change from the one piece rectangular light to the two round lights.

I understand the 1 piece was the first generation and then transitioned to the two piece upper light, lower reflector. Is there any significance in the change, ties to any particular type.

Anything to be aware of when building a period correct car or is it strictly personal preference?

The change from rectangular to round was made at CSX3200 until the end of 427 production... it was synchronous with the change to 428 engines.

If you are trying to replicate an S/C or a Comp car, you must use rectangular lights.

Ron, are you saying that 3100 series street cars had rectangular taillights?

Thats one of several changes I'd like to make on my ERA. Square, instead of the current round tail lights.
