Default Door Skin Attachment

Hey all
On an original door, how was the skin attached to the tube frame?
Anybody know? I don't see any rivet marks on unpainted cars.

Steel sheet was welded to the tubing, extending out to almost the door edges. The aluminum skin was wrapped around it. I don't know whether they used any sealer.

The aluminum skins were pop riveted to the tubular frame. Jim

Hey Larry I have some good reference photos of it if you're interested. The 3/4" round steel tube frame was made to line up quite close to the surrounding panel. A shrunk, stretched or straight piece of aluminum angle was riveted to the frame (birdcage) according to the frame curve. The edge of the aluminum angle is trimmed to fit uniformly inside the opening. The formed oversized skin panel is then trimmed to give about 3/8" return and hemmed around the aluminum angles.

I found this one of a Kirkham. I assume the originals were the same way. I see the riveted strip which if I understand the attachment, runs under the frame down to the door edge where it's folded over. Correct?

That shows it pretty well. Kirkhams is nicer and neater than originals. I believe they use more of a continuous strip for the aluminum rather than pieces. I've got more pics if you need them.

Examining my door, this is true for the bottom and sides, but not the top , which is rolled over the tube and riveted. Is that correct?

Thanks Jim, you're always a great resource for us. The door tops are the only places they did that. I believe it's because it doesn't need to align with surrounding panels like the rest of the door, hood and trunk. What do you think?
