Here is a picture of Carroll in 1957 at Virginia International Raceway. Notice the number 98 on the side of his Maserati. 6 cars behind him is the Chevy V-8 powered CorVace. Notice the sign at the EXIT of the turn. They must have had brass cannonballs...maybe titanium in those days.

This is a picture of a Jaguar powered AC at the same 1957 race. Engine experiments were pretty common at the time. Cat Allard, Lister Jag, CorVace, Lister Vette, etc.

Looking at the pictures, they must have had the fuel tank in the trunk like the 289 cars.
Can't tell what IRS they were running in the Corvace from the pics, any guesses?

The IRS looks like a stock Ace setup and I would guess there is a fuel cell in the trunk. The gas cap is on the fender in the stock location for an Ace and there is a probably a hose going to a cell mounted on the trunk floor. In the pic of the rear end you can see where the old gas tank mounting holes are still present and so it was probably removed and replaced with a safer option.

Wow, I can’t help here but this brings back some great childhood memories for me. 1966-67, for 2 years, I had a weekend job helping a guy restore and modify a 59 AC along with a turbocharged aluminum Olds 225 with a Muncie. He had the Borrani wire wheels widened and flares done too. I was the cleaner, sander, all around grunt, but I was in heaven and when I first got bit! We lived in SoCal by Torrance back then. He was an engineer for Air Research and then was hired by NASA to work on the Lunar Lander. He and his family moved to Houston and we lost touch a few years later. Great guy and ahead of his time for sure. But my friend Larry probably knew of the Corvace back then. I never knew of these cars but their existence does not surprise me. Very cool!

Not a totally unique idea, just plain ol' American hot rodding. There was a similar example in a multi page pictorial article in a mainstream magazine (name escapes me) that had little aluminum Olds V8 in a similar conversion effort. I think the car was from around Oakland CA in or about 1961. Also in the very early 60's shoehorning a 327 intop an Austin Healy 3000 made a nice Auto X car. They were called Healy Vettes. The main downfall of it was the lack of a regular frame, unibody got tweeked by all the torque.
